The John Harbaugh era begins Sunday night when the New York Giants host the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium, and Big Blue fans couldn’t be more excited.
Since the G-Men hired Harbaugh as the franchise’s next head coach on January 17, they have accomplished a lot. From signing Isaiah Likely and drafting Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa to holding training camp in West Virginia and most recently cutting veteran Darius Slayton, the longest-tenured player on the roster, it’s been an eventful offseason.
Now it’s time to see the Harbaugh effect in year one and how he impacts the Giants’ on-field product in what is expected to be a critical season for the franchise.
All eyes are on John Harbaugh this season to get the Giants back on track
Mike Jones of The Athletic recently published his list of the NFL’s 26 most intriguing figures ahead of the 2026 regular season, and Harbaugh cracked the list at No. 23. It’s no surprise, as all eyes will be on the 63-year-old this season to see if he can finally bring some much-needed stability back to New York.
“Harbaugh inherits a roster full of young talent, but his new charges still are trying to figure out what it takes to win in this league,” Jones wrote. “Harbaugh should have this team playing a physical brand of football, but the Giants have a big question at quarterback, where Jaxson Dart very much remains a project.”
That’s what makes Harbaugh’s first season in New York so intriguing. The Giants have young talent headlined by Dart, but now it’s on their new head coach to bring the same stability and competitive standard he established in Baltimore and turn that potential into wins.
The Giants are in a challenging NFC East division and don’t have the most favorable schedule, but expectations are for the team to be much improved. For plenty of fans, anything short of a significant jump in the win column would be a disappointment.
You don’t fire Brian Daboll, make a splash hire by bringing in a future Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach, and not expect to at least double your win total from the previous year. Just think about it: the Giants could win more games in 2026 than they did over the last two seasons combined, when they won seven.
Big Blue fans are tired of losing seasons, and hiring Harbaugh was a statement made by John Mara and the Giants’ ownership about the direction they see the franchise heading.
Despite winning four games last season, 2025 showed us there’s talent on the Giants’ roster. Now it’s time for the team to capitalize on that talent and turn it into results.
If there’s one person who can help do that while also establishing the physical brand of football that Jones mentioned, it’s Harbs. The Giants brought him to New York to get this team back on track, and starting Sunday night, we’ll finally get to see what the Harbaugh era looks like when the games count.
