The New York Giants need a quarterback this offseason, and Joe Schoen and Big Blue's front office will do everything they can to address this positional need in free agency and the NFL Draft.
The biggest obstacle will be finding the right quarterback. The Giants have the No. 3 pick, and it's a two-quarterback class with the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns picking ahead of them in the first round. Big Blue could also sign a veteran in free agency, but they’ll have to be aggressive with limited options. One option that could make the most sense is swinging a trade for a quarterback.
If the Giants don’t land someone who fits in and succeeds immediately in New York, it could set them back even further. So, it will be crucial for Schoen and his staff to take the time to make this decision and ensure they get the right guy in the building.
Recently, Bleacher Report outlined a complete trade guide for every NFL team in the 2025 offseason. The list included a hypothetical trade that would send Seattle Seahawks' quarterback Geno Smith, the No. 18 pick, and the No. 82 pick to the Giants in exchange for Jermaine Eluemunor, the No. 3 pick, and the No. 155 pick.
While Geno would be a significant upgrade at quarterback, this trade makes no sense, and if Schoen even thought about taking this offer, John Mara should personally escort him out of the building.
Joe Schoen can not get away with trading for Geno Smith this offseason
Smith started his career bouncing around the league before breaking out as a true starter with Seattle. That journey included a short stint with the Giants in 2017, where he served as Eli Manning’s backup. Unfortunately, that stint is remembered by Giants fans for all the wrong reasons.
At the time, Giants head coach Ben McAdoo made the infamous decision to bench Eli in Week 13 against the Raiders in favor of Smith, ending Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive starts—the second-longest for a quarterback behind Brett Favre’s 297. The Giants were 2-9 at the time, and McAdoo was looking for a different spark before it was too late in the season.
So, why would the Giants trade for the quarterback who ended the future first-ballot Hall of Famer’s streak? That alone would be taking steps in the wrong direction, raising plenty of questions among the fanbase.
Smith is also 34 years old, and the Giants are looking to get younger, which would go against everything they need. If they want a veteran quarterback, they should do it via free agency instead. According to Spotrac, New York has $47.8 million in cap space—money that Schoen should be using to target Justin Fields, who would be a much better fit.
Finally, the Giants would never make this trade because they would be giving up too much. The third overall pick and Eluemunor—one of Schoen’s biggest free-agent signings last offseason—would be on the table. And Eluemunor has already made it clear multiple times on social media that he wants to be here.
Yes, the Giants would get an experienced signal-caller, a first-round pick, and a third-round pick back, but at what cost? Why weaken the offensive line when it's already depleted—especially for someone like Eluemunor? Why trade the No. 3 overall pick when you could just sign Fields, who is nine years younger than Smith and would cost less money?
