Just when Kayvon Thibodeaux looked clear of Giants trade talk

Can't catch a break.

It seems like New York Giants pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux has officially taken up permanent residence at the trade rumor mill -- party of one. Whenever a team is searching for a pass-rusher, or a sports blog drops a trade target listicle, his name is inevitably thrown into the mix. And here I was thinking the KT trade talk was a thing of the past... silly me.

He has become the ultimate low-hanging fruit for anyone looking to stir up some trade talk.

The latest buzz comes courtesy of Bleacher Report, pulling the 2022 fifth-overall pick right back into the fold as mandatory minicamp wraps up. People are still treating the former Oregon star like a clearance-rack bargain, completely ignoring the fact that his stock in North Jersey has seemingly never been higher.

The reality is Thibs and new head coach John Harbaugh have completely hit it off. He absolutely killed it during spring practices, totally locked in with a coaching staff that can't stop praising his maturity and his role in defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson's defense.

Kayvon Thibodeaux trade rumors are making the rounds again

Yet, Gary Davenport floated a bizarre proposal sending the 25-year-old to the New England Patriots for a conditional 2027 third-round draft pick.

It’s an interesting valuation for a still-young pass-rusher with an 11.5-sack season on his résumé, even if the last two years have been underwhelming.

The background premise is that general manager Joe Schoen wants to dump him because Big Blue added rookie linebacker Arvell Reese alongside second-year pass-rusher Abdul Carter and reigning NFC sack leader Brian Burns -- call it a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.

The proposal itself hinges entirely on the panic of Thibodeaux's impending contract year, with Davenport noting:

"Of course, if the Giants can get a better deal than the compensatory pick the team will get when Thibodeaux all but certainly leaves in 2027 in free agency, it could be another story."

But who's to say that Thibodeaux will "all but certainly leave" New York in 2027?

Front offices will always find the money to keep young, potential-filled, productive pass-rushing depth around when they want to. Look no further than the Pittsburgh Steelers. They just handed Nick Herbig -- a rotational piece who isn't even a starter -- a four-year, $100 million extension this offseason.

They did that despite already having both T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith on expensive extensions already.

If Thibs can translate his strong spring performance and his growing chemistry with Harbs into a massive breakout 2026 season, he'll finally prove that his 11.5-sack 2023 season wasn't a fluke. Depending on how you feel about Thibs, a third-round pick is either a make-the-trade-now kind of deal or a hang-up-the-phone situation.

Regardless, it's hard to imagine a world where Schoen decides to make a move now. He has held off on trading away his first-ever draft pick he selected as Giants GM, and doing it after Thibs has fully bought into Harby and Co.'s vision makes no sense... especially with how he’s looked this spring.
