If Malik Nabers has any say and pull with the New York Giants, he might have attempted to use it through social media.
This past week on Twitter/X, Nabers posted a cryptic message that was left for everyone to interpret all over.
Why 9 and 10? The entire football and social media world was lead to believe that Nabers was talking about the possibility of the Rams veteran players who may both be on the way out via the trade market; quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
Kupp announced earlier in the week that he was informed that the Rams will be trading him. It’s not clear though if the Rams will do the same with Stafford. Although given Nabers' comments this past week about wanting to have a veteran quarterback on the roster in 2025, it wouldn’t be out of the question that Nabers was referring to wanting Stafford.
Whether or not it's Matthew Stafford, Malik Nabers wants a veteran quarterback
The Giants currently have around $43.3 million in salary cap space, so if they have any intention on potentially trading for either of Stafford or Kupp can be tricky, plus trying to figure out what kind of trade package would be enticing enough to make the Rams accept an offer to send the Gisnts both players.
Stafford, who has two years left on his current deal with Los Angeles, has a $49.6 million cap number for the 2025 season. So his deal alone would have to be reworked in order to get him under the salary cap, that is unless the Giants make other roster moves to fit him in with the contract as is. Even if the Giants did decide to trade for Stafford alone, his deal would likely needed to be reworked in order to add other pieces during the off-season.
This also isn’t the first time we are mentioning Stafford as a potential trade target, as we talked about the idea of Stafford for the Giants in 2025 and once the off-season was in full swing. Considering the Giants were given an early exit to the off-season plans with a 3-14 season, the 2025 plans are on for the Giants and if the Giants wanted to take a bold swing for Stafford, this could be the chance to do so with no current quarterbacks on the depth chart and team.
A far as Kupp goes, he has two years left on his contract and has a $29.7 million cap hit for the 2025 season. The Rams have been mentioned to be willing to help eat some of Kupp’s salary to help facilitate a trade and that’s where it could help a team like the Giants, who really are in need of adding a veteran wide receiver and a second wide out after Nabers, especially if Darius Slayton doesn’t come back like expected.
Let’s say the Rams are willing to make this happen, wipe the slate clean and deal away both Stafford and Kupp. What would the Giants need to offer as fair trade compensation. It;s hard enough to figure out a trade package for just one veteran player, much less, two. Given the salaries and ages, a first round pick is likely out, especially with Kupp’s injury history.
So here’s a possible trade offer:
The Giants have a fifth round pick from the Leonard Williams trade, but they also traded one away in the Brian Burns deal from a year ago. The Giants also have an extra seventh round pick from the Boogie Basham trade, but don’t have one in the sixth round, so because of those trades made, the Giants could use some of those picks mentioned above to package them in a potential trade.
The Giants can also afford to make this kind of trade offer since they are expected to receive a compensation pick in the fourth round from them losing Xavier McKinney in free agency to the Green Bay Packers.
With this trade proposal, it gives the Rams the chance to hit the reset button and a lot of draft compensation to figure out their future. On the other side, it gives the Giants a solid veteran quarterback for another two seasons and one of his favorite veteran target wide receivers to go with an up and coming rookie who set several records in his first season with the Giants. Plus the Giants could have options still as far as drafting a quarterback in several different rounds depending on what happens before their third overall pick.
If this is what Nabers is looking for, then we’ll see if Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll can work one more trade with the Rams like they did on the second night of the 2023 NFL Draft. “Scared money don’t make money.” Schoen has to remember that heading into the offseason. This trade attempt could be what is needed to give a struggling franchise a needed jolt. And maybe one back into NFL relevancy.
