We are about a month away from the 2025 NFL trade deadline, which is pretty crazy. We’re already approaching the midpoint of the season. As we get closer, we’ll undoubtedly see New York Giants names like Kayvon Thibodeaux and Russell Wilson floated around. We’re also starting to see Big Blue mentioned as a potential suitor for a particular AFC North tight end.
David Njoku of the Cleveland Browns could be on his way to the Meadowlands, according to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox in his latest article. Since entering the league, Njoku has been as steady a tight end as they come. In nine years, he’s averaged about 40 catches, 430 yards, and 3 touchdowns per season. Solid numbers, but not something the Giants should entertain.
The front office was already in desperation mode, and even more so now with Malik Nabers' season-ending ACL injury, but this cannot be the move they make. One reason? Njoku is in a contract year, and with how Cleveland has looked in the first quarter of the season, it’s likely he’ll go elsewhere.
That means New York would have to give up draft capital they've been all too eager to part ways with. They’d probably need to give up a fourth- or fifth-round pick and potentially one of their sixth-rounders for a player of Njoku’s caliber, just not worth the risk of him eventually walking.
The Giants need another pass catcher, but David Njoku isn’t the answer
With no Nabers, the G-Men have to do something to bolster the receiving corps, but the answer isn’t a tight end. Sign a free agent to a small-money contract, or even trade for a player with some team control left. But they can’t trade for a guy who could just be a rental. Especially when they aren’t particularly close to being a contender.
Big Blue also cannot sell its Theo Johnson stock this early. The guy is a player. In his rookie year, the 24-year-old still posted 29 catches for 331 yards and a touchdown. Not too far off from Njoku’s career averages. In 2025, he already has 9 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. And based on Jaxson Dart’s debut, it looks like Johnson is going to be much more a part of the game plan.
Everyone is excited after the win, and again, yes... they need to bring in someone for Dart to throw to. But not Njoku. The risk does not outweigh the reward. The front office would be making a splashy move just for the sake of making one.
