Malik Nabers isn’t enough, and the answer may have just hit the market

It's worth a shot.

The New York Giants desperately need a spark. Malik Nabers looks like the real deal, but even the best wide receivers can’t do it alone—just ask Garrett Wilson over in New York Jets land. The Giants have a lot of questions heading into 2025, but one thing is clear: they need more playmakers.

If memory serves me right, Deebo Samuel is a pretty decent playmaker. And according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Samuel will likely be on his way out of San Francisco soon. Interesting.

According to Tyler Brooke of the 33rd Team, the Giants could be a legitimate trade destination for the San Francisco 49ers star wideout. The proposed deal? New York sends the 65th overall pick in this year’s draft to San Francisco in exchange for Samuel and the 112th pick.

That’s a pretty sweet, very reasonable trade package that could give Big Blue a dynamic one-two punch at receiver for whoever is under center next season.

How Does Deebo Samuel fit with the Giants?

The idea of adding a veteran like Samuel isn’t just about making a splash—it’s about giving anyone taking snaps under center (literally whoever ends up leading the offense) a legitimate supporting cast. Brooke put it best:

"The Giants could try to take Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft, but even if they do so, they can't have a rookie quarterback trying to force-feed one target, even one as talented as Nabers. Adding a safety blanket underneath in a veteran like Samuel is the perfect way to settle down a rookie quarterback early in their career, especially with a coaching staff led by Brian Daboll. Nabers and Samuel bring a great one-two punch to any offense, especially one that will likely be getting a new quarterback this offseason."

He’s not wrong. Nabers is an absolute stud, but right now, this offense has no consistent No. 2 option. Darius Slayton is likely gone, Wan’Dale Robinson showed some signs of being a capable No. 3 receiver, and the tight end room is a work in progress. Deebo’s presence would force defenses to pick their poison instead of simply bracketing Nabers and daring the Giants to throw the football anywhere else.

Of course, there are concerns. Samuel is 29 and has dealt with his fair share of injuries. His rugged playing style—essentially functioning as a wide receiver and a part-time running back—has led to a decent amount of wear and tear. That’s not ideal for a team trying to build a long-term contender. But at the price of a third-round pick? That’s a risk worth considering.

New York is still figuring out its quarterback situation, but regardless of who takes the snaps in 2025, they’ll need more than one person to run routes. Samuel isn’t the long-term answer, but he could be a bridge to stability, giving the Giants at least a fighting chance to climb out of the NFC basement.

Let's see how the Giants choose to navigate the trade waters.
