For New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy to silence his critics, he’ll need to make his voice heard.
Unfortunately for the bloggers and pundits, they won’t be hearing Nagy the way that Jaxson Dart will come Week 1.
Granted, that’s how it should be.
Nagy, who spent the last four years as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, has a far greater task on his hands than simply developing Dart into a franchise quarterback.
“Nagy will literally be the voice calling the plays to Dart during games, and the OC will be in charge of devising the game plan,” Duggan wrote.
Nagy called the plays during his first two years as the Bears’ coach. He relinquished playcalling midway through the 2020 season and was fired a year later.
The Matt Nagy redemption tour is already hitting roadblocks
Nagy finds himself in the same situation he had while with the Chiefs, except he no longer has Patrick Mahomes.
If the Giants win, Nagy will get head coaching interviews. He met with the Cardinals, Ravens, Raiders, and Titans this past cycle.
Tennessee opted for another bounceback coach in 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who coached the Jets from 2021 through October 2024.
Yet, the media already appears quite down on Nagy and the new-look Giants offense. The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen recently expressed skepticism that the offense will avoid being repetitive, as he felt was the case in Kansas City.
CBS Sports’ Jared Durbin ripped Dart for playing with a “reckless physical style,” yet also acknowledged he’s unsure whether Dart can succeed if he tries playing it safer.
Doctors evaluated Dart for a concussion at least five times, and he missed two games.
Dart did not end last year on injured reserve, nor has he reportedly battled any setbacks this offseason.
Enough has also been said about the Giants’ offseason offensive additions, from tight end Isaiah Likely to rookie receiver Malachi Fields.
Both men, as well as Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin, figure to have an immediate role in the Giants’ passing game.
Nagy and the Giants are also poised to have running back Cam Skattebo back for training camp. Skattebo impressed last year before a season-ending ankle injury.
The pieces are in place for Dart and Nagy to succeed, at least by the modern Giants’ standards.
Words are weapons, and for his sake, Nagy better hope that whatever leaves his mouth on game day carves through opposing defenses.
