There's never a good time to get hurt, no matter the severity. However, the timing of New York Giants outside linebacker Abdul Carter's injury scare is especially poor for all parties involved.
Carter was reportedly spotted leaving Day 1 of New York's mandatory minicamp with an apparent foot ailment, dampening what's been a buzzy offseason. Fortunately, early signs suggest he avoided any major damage, though his early practice exit was also a sobering wake-up call for even the brightest optimists.
Giants fans have understandably been soaking in the honeymoon phase of hiring Super Bowl-winning head coach John Harbaugh. The club has made all the right moves with him running the show. Be that as it may, Carter's tweak, albeit minor, takes some air out of East Rutherford.
Abdul Carter injury scare puts damper on Giants' offseason hype
Harbaugh said "it looks like [Carter] twisted his ankle," adding that it "doesn't look serious," per the New York Daily News' Pat Leonard. There will presumably be additional testing and more concrete updates to follow, but the G-Men seem to have dodged a serious bullet — for now.
Nevertheless, Carter was seen without his left shoe and sock and "limping very gingerly off to the side," according to Leonard. That's far from good news, to say the least, and suggests New York might not be entirely out of the woods quite yet.
It's bad enough that Carter got dinged up. The fact that he went down as Giants running back Cam Skattebo participated in drills roughly eight months after suffering a fractured ankle particularly stings. They're two of the players Big Blue Nation is most excited to see and key pieces of the team's short- and long-term success.
Hopefully, Carter's back on the field sooner rather than later. Coming off an uneven yet promising rookie campaign, the 2025 No. 3 overall pick is poised for a second-year breakout, assuming health allows. He proved to be one of the league's most disruptive edge presences, ranking fifth in ESPN's pass rush win rate (21 percent) among his position.
Across 17 games last season, Carter recorded 43 combined tackles (seven for loss), 23 quarterback hits, four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His efforts yielded a strong 74.7 overall Pro Football Focus grade, which ranked 29th out of 115 qualified edge defenders
