In a move everyone knew was coming, the New York Giants indeed benched quarterback Daniel Jones on Monday, effectively ending the era.
It wasn't surprising in the least bit, and it's a move the Giants have long-needed to make. Finally, it has been done, and the team can start looking ahead.
Following the decision to bench Jones, we've heard a lot of different takes, opinions and reports on other Giants-related storylines. One of the bigger reports, lately, is the idea that Daboll is apparently coaching for his job over these final seven games.
According to Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, that's exactly the case in New York.
"Sources: While ownership has suggested he’ll return, there is a growing sense that Giants HC Brian Daboll is coaching for his job over the final seven games," Schultz reported.
What's even more curious is the idea that Daboll chose to go with Tommy DeVito because of the fact he is coaching for his job. So, Daboll truly believes DeVito gives the Giants the best chance to win ... and for him to keep his job.
Brian Daboll would get hired immediately if the Giants fired him after the season
If New York opted to part ways with Daboll, there's no doubt he wouldn't last long on the open market, and that's not even to say he'd be an offensive coordinator. Some believe he'd be a head coach, right away, once more.
Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel chimed in on the latest edition of the Scoop City podcast, alongside The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
More Giants news:
"I think Brian Daboll's gonna get another (head coaching) job. I think the reason Brian Daboll has sucked is because Daniel Jones has sucked," Daniel said.
I would tend to agree, here. Daboll was credited with single-handedly developing Josh Allen over in Buffalo, and look at him now. Allen is arguably the league's top quarterback, right now, and playing at an MVP-caliber level.
The Giants are going to risk getting rid of the coach responsible for turning Allen into this player? All because of a gigantic Daniel Jones mistake?
We are only two years removed from Daboll being able to nearly-salvage Jones as an NFL starting quarterback, helping the veteran to his most efficient season as a pro, ever. The Giants made the postseason and even won that initial playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings with Jones under center.
I don't believe Daboll has gotten enough credit for the type of coach he has been, especially under the circumstances in New York. Not only has Jones been erratic and inconsistent, the offensive line has been one of the worst groups in football since Daboll took over.
You're telling me that's a fair shot?
No chance.
Daboll is a good head coach. Let him be part of the quarterback selection process in 2025 and do not, for any reason, let him leave the building.
