While the New York Giants did sign two veteran quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston this offseason, the selection of Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft has many fans looking towards the future and waiting for No. 6 to take his first tentative steps in the league.
Head coach Brian Daboll is unlikely to turn to Dart early in the season due to his desire to save his own job after two very poor seasons in a row, but the siren song of Dart may eventually force him into the lineup.
ESPN's Dan Graziano's list of biggest quarterback questions for all 32 teams focused heavily on Daboll's desperation, as his big quandary for Big Blue was "Can the Giants resist Jaxson Dart temptation all season long?" Graziano drew a parallel between the Giants and last year's New England Patriots.
While the Patriots may have signed Jacoby Brissett and said many of the same things the Giants are about their young starlet, Drake Maye ended up becoming the full-time QB1 by Week 6. Dart could be on a very similar path if the vets struggle.
ESPN wonders when Giants' Brian Daboll will turn to Jaxson Dart
Wilson still has some juice left in the tank, and Winston's penchant for ripping off big plays down the field should be more than enough to link up with Malik Nabers for a few explosives. For a coach and front office that is clearly on the hot seat, they will try not to waive the player development white flag for as long as they can.
However, this organization did believe that Dart is going to be the guy who erases their post-Eli Manning quarterback malaise, and they would like to see as much evidence as possible that their investment is a wise one. That orgainzational directive could overrule what Daboll and Schoen want to do.
The Giants have a meat-grinder of a schedule, especially in the first few weeks of the season. If the losses begin to pile up, and the season is lost, making sure that Dart is well-equipped to lead this team in the future irrespective of who the head coach is should be the top priority.
If the Giants crash and burn to a point where Wilson's tenure as an NFL starter likely will come to a close, look for Dart to eventually crack the starting lineup and try to show everyone why he was working trading back into the first round of the NFL Draft to acquire.
