The New York Giants have been searching for answers all season along their offensive line, a unit that has been riddled with injuries and inconsistency.

At 2-8, the Giants’ offense ranks near the bottom of the league in most categories, with a significant portion of the blame falling on the inability to protect the quarterback or open up lanes in the running game.

In an effort to stabilize the line, the Giants are turning to a familiar face. While this move isn’t likely to transform their fortunes overnight, it adds some much-needed depth to a struggling position group. After weeks of scrambling to piece together a functional unit, the Giants hope this signing can provide some relief as they prepare for the second half of their season.

New York Giants reunite with Tyre Phillips

The Giants have signed offensive lineman Tyre Phillips to their practice squad, marking his return to the team. Phillips, a former third-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, has a history with New York, where he played a significant role during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Phillips originally joined the Giants after being released by the Ravens and made an immediate impact in 2023, starting nine games at right tackle for an injury-depleted offensive line. During that season, he posted a career-low two sacks allowed and a 96.4 pass-blocking efficiency rating, tying his personal best.

Despite his solid play, the Giants inexplicably cut him after training camp in 2023. He spent time on the Eagles’ practice squad before being re-signed by the Giants midseason.

After undergoing surgery for a late-season quad injury, Phillips has spent the past several months rehabbing and is now healthy enough to contribute. While he’s starting on the practice squad, Phillips could quickly elevate to the active roster, given the state of the Giants’ offensive line.

This signing doesn’t fix all the Giants’ offensive woes, but it provides a proven option who knows the system and has demonstrated the ability to perform when called upon. Phillips’ versatility, having played both guard and tackle, makes him a valuable piece as the Giants try to salvage some respectability on offense.

As the Giants continue their evaluation of young quarterback Tommy DeVito, solidifying the offensive line is a crucial step to avoid further chaos under center. Bringing back Phillips is a modest but necessary move for a team trying to find any semblance of stability in a lost season.
