The New York Giants are ushering in a new era under John Harbaugh, and there are several young players who are building blocks for this regime. Jaxson Dart and Malik Nabers are the two biggest names that probably come to people's minds, but running back Cam Skattebo is another.
While each guy will have a big role, the latest report suggests that the Giants may not done adding to the running back room. The Athletic's Dan Duggan revealed that New York will look to bring in another tailback to the rotation.
"That figures to be a time share, with Skattebo the 1-A and Tracy the 1-B.... Running back remains a position the Giants will seek to reinforce before the season, particularly if they can find a dynamic runner," Duggan wrote.
The fact that the Giants are looking to make another addition to the running back room doesn't come off as a resounding endorsement to Skattebo.
Giants will be in market to add another running back
Skattebo still seems to be in line to be the top running back in the rotation, but it hasn't stopped the team from looking at upgrades. The 24-year-old had his rookie season cut short due to a dislocated ankle. Before going down, he was a true force in the backfield.
In eight games (five starts), he had 110 carries for 410 rushing yards and five rushing scores. While he was productive, Skattebo has a specific run style. He's a downhill thumper as a runner. That physical style of running is fun to watch and forces defenders into a bind, but it opens the door to more injuries.
The Giants already felt that within one season. It's also important to note that neither Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., nor Devin Singletary are shifty, agile runners. They are more one-cut and get uphill, but that running back room is missing that big-play ability.
They desire a more "dynamic runner" is telling and shows the Giants know they are lacking some juice in the backfield. It doesn't mean that Skattebo won't have a big role in this offense. He still will, but this report shows he may not be the bellcow that people want.
The Giants want to have several options in the backfield, and they will look to add someone there. Whether that comes before or during the season remains to be seen. Regardless, fans should keep an eye out on the running back room, as there could be a newcomer sooner rather than later. And if they do make an addition, that running back could take some carries away from Skattebo.
