Giants could soon get relief from painful Saquon Barkley chapter

This can't end soon enough.

It was absolutely heartbreaking when Saquon Barkley not only left the New York Giants organization in the 2024 offseason but signed with the freaking Philadelphia Eagles of all teams. Seriously, of all the other teams in the league, Barkley picked the team Giants fans least wanted to see him end up with.

Giants fans were kicked in the stomach immediately, as Barkley rushed for over 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns with New York's most hated foe. The worst part of all was watching Barkley and the Eagles go on to win Super Bowl 59 in a blowout victory over the Chiefs. It just kept getting worse.

Fortunately, Barkley came back down to earth in 2026. He still had a nice year but it was definitely a regression for a guy who went over the 2,000-yard mark the previous year.

That brings us to the latest Barkley news. According to Sports Illustrated Eagles reporter Jeff Kerr, the relationship between the Eagles and Barkley could very well be nearing its conclusion.

"Barkley makes $20.6 million a season on average and has an option bonus of $14.405 million in 2027. This plays a role in what the Eagles will do regrading Barkley's future. The Eagles could designate Barkley as a post-June 1 cut and save just over $5 million against the salary cap -- which would be a smart business decision.

"If the Eagles pick up the option, they are paying a lot of money for a 30-year-old running back. Barkley wasn't elite last seaosn, and it may not matter if he's elite this season.

"The contract extension the Eagles gave him last offseason did Barkley no favors, but maybe he and the Eagles both knew that. This has been a good ride, but it may be coming to an end."

Saquon Barkley's time with the Eagles could be over after this year

It's funny that a 1,100-yard season isn't considered elite, but that's how it goes for running backs. Barkley was an unstoppable force for the Eagles in 2024 but clearly, the team might think he's replaceable moving forward.

It's been a painful time for Giants fans seeing their former second overall pick go on to do what he has with their biggest rival but that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes. It sounds as though Philly might be looking to move on from Barkley soon and that means, while Giants fans won't forget this chapter, they at least won't have to relive it every single day once he's out of the division.
