Despite it not being officially announced yet, the New York Giants are rumored to open up their 2025 season on the road against the Washington Commanders, according to Art Stapelton of NorthJersey.com. However, nothing has been confirmed yet.
The Giants will be hoping to flip the script in Week 1, having gone just 2-7 in their last nine season openers. It’ll be an early test for what fans hope is a new-and-improved Big Blue squad—especially against a Commanders team that not only swept them last season, but became one of the league’s feel-good stories by reaching the NFC title game for the first time since 1991, led by rookie phenom Jayden Daniels.
While the Giants pulled off a widely praised draft—landing arguably the best player in Abdul Carter and a potential franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart—they’re already being viewed as an easy win for the Commanders in Week 1.

In an article from Riggo’s Rag, Dean Jones predicted that with Washington opening the season by hosting their NFC East counterparts, they’ll notch an easy Week 1 victory.
Jones’ reasoning for giving the Commanders a practically automatic 1-0 start is tied to their season sweep of the Giants in 2024, along with the high expectations surrounding Jayden Daniels in his second season. He also cites New York still being in the middle of a long and brutal rebuild. While it’s true the Commanders got the best of the G-Men last season, Jones conveniently left out some key context behind those wins.
In their first meeting in Week 2, the Giants played without a healthy kicker after Graham Gano suffered an injury on the opening kickoff. That forced the Giants to go for two after all three of their touchdowns—and they went 0-for-3. That mishap allowed Austin Seibert’s seven field goals to be the difference in a 21-18 Washington win.
Their Week 9 rematch was another close one, with both teams trading punches before the Commanders ultimately pulled away in a 27-22 victory.
It’s no secret that the Giants’ 2025 schedule could very well be the toughest in the league. Still, we have yet to see this hopefully revamped Giants squad take the field, and with the way they played the Commanders in both games last season, a 1-0 start for Washington should not be viewed as a slam dunk.
