The New York Giants will be searching for a new head coach this offseason after firing Brian Daboll last week. The Giants will hopefully exhaust all options and that should include any college coaches who might be prepared to take the leap from college football to the NFL.
One big name from college football who could be taking that step from college to the pros is Steve Sarkisian, currently the head coach of the Texas Longhorns. There was a rumor earlier in the season about Sarkisian being interested in moving on from Texas to join the NFL ranks and now Desmond Howard, a former Heisman Trophy winner and 11-year NFL veteran has chimed in on those rumors perhaps not being rumors.
“Don’t be surprised if that Texas job opens up at the end of the season,” Howard said on a live Instagram story. “You guys were shocked when LSU opened up. Imagine how you’re going to feel if that job in Austin pops open. I’m not calling or saying anyone’s going to get fired... maybe a mutual parting of ways, you dig?”
Steve Sarkisian could make a lot of sense as Giants next head coach
Howard's comments insinuate that if Sarkisian were to leave Texas, it'd be his decision and not the university kicking him to the curb. The Longhorns have been one of the country's top programs in the last few years, proving that Sark is capable of leading a program and doing so admirably.
If he's serious about leaving Texas and joining the NFL, the Giants could be a nice landing spot for him. New York has Jaxson Dart as its young signal caller, a promising running back in Cam Skattebo, and a proven wide receiver in Malik Nabers, all weapons that an offensive-minded head coach could only dream of inheriting.
The fact of the matter is that the Giants are an attractive job opening and if Sarkisian wants to break into the NFL and stick with wherever he goes, this could be the perfect destination for him. He'd have weapons to scheme around on offense and Giants fans would take solace in knowing that Sarkisian has already proven himself to be a successful coach elsewhere.
This pairing isn't being talked about currently but it makes a lot of sense if you really think about it, doesn't it?
