Football is back, and the preseason games have fans excited about what is to come this NFL season. Many rookies impressed last week during their preseason debuts, including New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart.
All four Giants quarterbacks got action, but it's safe to say Dart had the most impressive performance against the Buffalo Bills. The first-round pick completed 12 of 19 passes for 154 yards and a 29-yard touchdown to Lil'Jordan Humphrey, which he made look easy.
The future looks bright with the 22-year-old under center for the G-Men, but let's pump the brakes a little bit and not get too ahead of ourselves with predictions. Dart is still behind Russell Wilson on Big Blue's depth chart and will use this season to develop and learn behind veterans like Jameis Winston.
CBS Sports gives us an overreaction after Jaxson Dart's preseason debut
Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports recently wrote a piece about the biggest overreactions from Week 1 of the preseason and what is a reality based on what we watched last week. Kerr calls Dart being Big Blue's passing leader this season an overreaction.
Kerr says that Dart didn't look like a rookie against the Bills and played like a veteran, and may have entered a quarterback competition with veterans Wilson and Winston. While fans would love to see the Giants' first-rounder take the field on Sundays, they may need to be more patient.
No matter how well the 22-year-old plays during training camp and the preseason, Russell Wilson will likely still start Week 1. Brian Daboll wasted no time at all naming Russ the team's starting QB because of his veteran experience and New York's brutal schedule to start the season.
The G-Men would not want to destroy Dart's confidence against tough opponents, and with the rookie not being the opening day starter, it's unlikely he would lead the team in passing yards. We've only seen Dart play one time, so it would be unfair to assume that when you have a Super Bowl Champion ahead of him on the depth chart and an experienced veteran.
In a perfect world, the rookie does not see the field this year or, at the very least, until December, and the Giants let Dart sit and develop behind Wilson and Winston, but who's to say if he continues to impress and the team is struggling, they don't give him a chance sooner rather than later?
The Giants face the Jets in preseason action on Saturday, and if Dart looks anything like he did against the Bills last week or how he has throughout training camp, it's safe to say the future may be sooner than we think for the G-Men.
