Now that the New York Giants are fully engulfed in the Jaxson Dart era, some fans think it makes sense for the team to move on from veteran Russell Wilson before the November 4 NFL trade deadline.
However, if you were to ask some of the experts and insiders out there, they might tell you it's a long shot from happening. In fact, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Matt Bowen recently chimed in on the topic and, well, see for yourselves:
"Trading Wilson would be a challenge because of the scarcity of available starting QB jobs," Fowler wrote.
Fowler and Bowen gave the notion of trading Wilson just a 10 percent chance o happening.
Russell Wilson might be stuck with the Giants for now
Fowler's point makes a ton of sense. There really are no starting jobs available right now, unless the Miami Dolphins wanted to take their circus to even more hilarious heights by benching Tua Tagovailoa and trading for Wilson.
The problem with that, though, is that the Dolphins are headed nowhere (towards a rebuild, actually) and would have no use for another veteran like Wilson. So, yes, there may be a starting spot up for grabs in Miami, but it's not going to go to Wilson. That's for sure.
"At this stage of Wilson's career, compensation would not be steep. His days as a productive starter appear to be over," Fowler went on.
"But what about the New York Jets?" you might ask.
Well, it's the same story there as well. The Jets have yet to win a game. It doesn't even remotely make sense to give up assets for an aging Wilson who won't move the needle all that much. The Jets are fully looking ahead to next year. Just ask Woody Johnson his thoughts on the current state of affairs, and you'll get the gist.
So, if Wilson is traded, where does he end up? Fowler and Bowen suggest the Saints and Raiders as fits, but how much better is Wilson than Geno Smith or Spencer Rattler at this stage? Does he move the needle with either of those teams?
That's a hard question to answer, which isn't something I thought I'd be saying a few weeks ago. Wilson's time on the field, this season, hasn't shown much left in the tank, and the Giants very well could be stuck with him for the remainder of the year.
