So long, Skatt. The New York Giants officially placed rookie running back Cam Skattebo on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday, just two days after he underwent surgery for the dislocated ankle he suffered in Philadelphia. And in the first of what should be several roster moves to come, they obviously filled his spot with **checks notes** a cornerback.
As one does.
Rather than address the obvious offensive need, the G-Men doubled down on their banged-up secondary, claiming former Cleveland Browns cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse off waivers. No word yet if he’s rocking the Chuck Taylor high-tops, but his arrival does add some needed depth to a defense that’s losing bodies by the minute.
According to Giants beat writer Pat Leonard, they also added linebacker Swayze Bozeman to the practice squad and released wide receiver Juice Wells Jr. But the Bernard-Converse claim was the headliner — because of the shoe connection... but mostly because nobody saw it coming.
Giants claim Jarrick Bernard-Converse after Cam Skattebo lands on IR
Let’s start here: the 25-year-old defensive back has played in 20 NFL games and has logged seven total tackles — and not much else.
He was waived by the Browns after not recording a single stat in five appearances this season. But before you torch the move, remember how desperate Big Blue's secondary situation is. With Cor’Dale Flott in concussion protocol and both Jevón Holland and Paulson Adebo nursing knee injuries, someone — anyone — had to come in.
The 6-foot-1 DB played college ball at both Oklahoma State (where he was first-team All-Big 12) and LSU. The New York Jets took him in the sixth round of the 2023 Draft and kept him around for two seasons before cutting ties.
That led to a pit stop in Cleveland, which ended about as quietly as you’d expect.
He’s no world-beater, but the third-year corner does bring 241 career special teams snaps to the table. He’s also versatile enough to play safety, which gives the G-Men some wiggle room as they try to stabilize things on the back end.
As for the offense, it’s anyone’s guess what general manager Joe Schoen plans to do. Skatt's gone, Malik Nabers is already out for the year, and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart is now playing alongside a makeshift cast of characters. If this is the first move, it better not be the last.
