Misery loves company in East Rutherford. Just a day after the devastating news broke that star wideout Malik Nabers required a second surgery on his torn ACL (a clean-up procedure that reportedly happened weeks ago), the New York Giants received another brutal medical blow before training camp even began.

The injury bug is already biting hard, making fans understandably freak out that the cursed MetLife turf has claimed its first victim of 2026.

Undrafted rookie defensive back Thaddeus Dixon is the latest casualty. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the 24-year-old UDFA out of North Carolina tragically tore his Achilles during Wednesday's workout. The Giants wasted no time moving him to Injured Reserve (IR) on Thursday, ending his rookie campaign before it ever truly started.

It's a heartbreaking turn of events for the talented corner. Dixon was highly motivated to put his collegiate injury history in the rearview mirror after a nagging hamstring strain damaged his 2026 NFL Draft stock. Instead, it's back to the trainer's room until he can suit up again.

Thaddeus Dixon injury pushes Giants into early roster shuffle

Losing Dixon hurts more than the average UDFA departure. At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, the former Tar Heel possessed the ideal length, physical press-man traits, and aggressive mentality that defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson has been looking for.

Despite sliding out of the draft due to medical red flags, the Giants’ front office viewed him as a legitimate 53-man roster contender, backing it up by giving him a massive $282,500 fully guaranteed contract post-draft. It's impossible to overlook that Harbaugh has brought on at least one UDFA in 17 of his 18 seasons. It very well could have been Dixon.

With the California native sidelined, general manager Joe Schoen quickly pivoted to reshuffling the offseason's 90-man roster.

In a corresponding move, the G-Men signed veteran pass-rusher Khalid Kareem. The 28-year-old brings five years of NFL experience to the table, including past stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears. Known primarily as a high-motor rotational run defender, Kareem provides potential depth to the pass-rushing group rather than addressing the secondary directly. Good luck cracking that group.

Interestingly, Big Blue also hosted free-agent cornerback Nazeeh Johnson for a workout on Thursday. While they opted to sign Kareem instead of Johnson for now, the timing is impossible to ignore. Whether it was a direct response to the rookie's injury or a pre-planned evaluation, it proves the front office knows the secondary is thin -- and that special teams could always use the help.
