As the New York Giants gear up this offseason to try and improve their squad after a historically bad 2024 season, one thing remains clear: they need a quarterback. After six mediocre years with Daniel Jones under center, Joe Schoen and Co. are under enormous pressure this offseason to find their next franchise signal-caller.
With New York slated to have the third overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the most realistic move would be to take a quarterback with that selection. Names like Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward are among the most highly touted prospects in this year's class. However, the teams picking ahead of the Giants—the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns—may also be in the market for quarterbacks.
If the G-Men miss out on Sanders and Ward or believe they have no shot at landing them even before the draft takes place, they could pivot to free agency, where several highly coveted signal-callers will be available once the new league year starts in March. If the Giants go that route, could they sign this veteran and former Super Bowl champion?
The Giants could sign Russell Wilson in free agency
In an article for Bleacher Report, Gary Davenport predicts the Giants will sign veteran quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason. This may not be a popular decision, given Wilson is now 36 years old, but Davenport doubled down on his prediction, believing the Titans and Browns could take Ward and Sanders ahead of the Giants. Davenport wrote:
"The Giants slammed the door on the Daniel Jones era last year, but if the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns take quarterbacks at No. 1 and No. 2 in the draft, the G-Men will be frozen out of Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.
If that's the case, they may look to add a developmental prospect on Day 2. Wilson's best days may be behind him, but the veteran would be a solid stopgap option after winning six of 11 starts and posting a passer rating over 95 with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024."
Despite Wilson and the Steelers ending last season on a five-game losing streak, the former Super Bowl winner had a solid first—and potentially only—season in Pittsburgh. He would certainly be an upgrade over the quarterbacks the Giants have had in recent years. Wilson passed for 3,070 yards last season with 26 touchdowns to just eight interceptions and posted a strong 98.0 quarterback rating.
Also, Wilson wouldn’t have to be a long-term answer for Big Blue if they miss out on both Ward and Sanders. The team is reportedly intrigued by Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, who is projected to fall deep in the draft. He could sit and learn under Wilson until he’s ready to take over for the long haul.
Even though Wilson may not be the same quarterback who led the Seattle Seahawks to eight playoff appearances and two Super Bowls, he would still be a significant upgrade for the Giants' offense. We are still several weeks away from the start of the new league year and over a month away from the draft, but this latest prediction of New York adding Wilson is not a bad idea by any stretch.
