The New York Giants have been playing good football, as they sit in first place in the NFC East with a 4-2-1 record. With them entering their bye at the halfway point, the Giants are focused on a second-half push.
The trade deadline is Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. EST, and New York could be eyeing a move. Indianapolis Colts are taking calls on running back Jonathan Taylor, and the Giants are believed to be at the front of the line, but they have one key edge over the Minnesota Vikings in the pursuit, according to The Athletic's Jonathan Jones.
"The Vikings and Giants appear to be the favorites to land him if he’s dealt, but he can’t fit under Minnesota’s cap right now. So either the Vikings would have to rearrange a deal or two, or the Colts would have to eat some of his salary, which would likely drive the price up for the acquiring team," Jones wrote.
With it being highlighted that the Giants are calling about the star tailback, not having to deal with any cap issues if they did trade for Taylor makes things a bit easier at the negotiation table.
Giants have a potential Jonathan Taylor edge that Minnesota lacks
The fact that the Vikings would have to jump over some hurdles in order to get Taylor from the Colts could impact them when trying to strike a deal. Since Indy would have to eat some of his salary, they would seek a higher pick in return. That wouldn't be the story with New York, which may not force them to pony up more assets.
New York currently owns their first, second, and third-round picks in the 2027 NFL Draft, but that isn't holding them back ahead of the deadline. The Giants want to add more to their backfield, and there isn't a better option available.
Taylor is 27 years old and signed through the 2028 season. He's certainly one of the top backs in the league and is making a ton of plays for the Colts. This season, Taylor is fifth in the league in rushing yards (587) and tied for first in rushing touchdowns (8). He is a home-run threat every time he touches the ball and would provide New York with an impact player not only this year but in the future as well.
The Giants are in control of the division halfway through the year, and making a move for Taylor could set them up for even more success. And head coach John Harbaugh isn't shy about making a big move.
John Harbaugh could be Giants' driving force to land Jonathan Taylor
Harbaugh doesn't report to GM Joe Schoen, but to ownership instead. He has a lot of power in that building, and that could impact potential moves. Jones also reported that Harbaugh called Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk directly in an attempt to trade for Jeffery Simmons.
He was turned away, just as Schoen was by Titans GM Mike Borgonzi, but that kind of move shows that there isn't anyone that Harbaugh won't call to try and get a deal done. He has earned that respect around the league and brought that over to Big Blue.
In his first year at the helm, the Giants are playing like a much improved team, and with the chance to get one of the best running backs in the league, New York is checking in. They have an edge over the Vikings in terms of money, and a coach like Harbaugh, willing to move the needle, is something else that can work in their favor.
