Father Time comes for us all eventually. However, veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell continues to be the exception — and he'd look great doing so in a New York Giants uniform.
Turning 40 before the 2026 campaign, Campbell remains a fearsome interior presence. The ageless wonder is still a free agent after returning to the Arizona Cardinals, who drafted him back in 2008, on a one-year contract. He presents the Giants with a golden opportunity to meaningfully address their shortcomings on the defensive line.
The Giants recently signed defensive lineman Sam Roberts, though he leaves much to be desired as an unheralded journeyman. His arrival shouldn't deter the club's brain trust from adding someone of Campbell's professional and physical stature.
DL Calais Campbell makes for ideal Giants free agency target
Betting on whatever magical elixir Campbell has found to prolong his remarkable near-two-decade run in the league has proven fruitful at every stop. He's shown no signs of slowing down and can be a difference-maker for New York. Putting him alongside another dominant force, like Giants two-time All-Pro Dexter Lawrence, would be a straight-up matchup nightmare for opponents.
In 2025, Campbell recorded 6.5 sacks despite logging a sub-50 percent defensive snap share rate. He also finished fifth among defensive tackles in quarterback pressures after facing double teams with 14 (h/t NFL Research's Tony Holzman-Escareno). Now, imagine him thriving next to Lawrence and the Giants' dangerous pass rush.
Lawrence ensures there will almost always be exploitable one-on-one opportunities in the trenches, considering he's a one-man wrecking crew by himself. Meanwhile, you can't forget about the dynamic duo of star Brian Burns and rising second-year pro Abdul Carter on the perimeter. The Giants' talented front seven can take some of the burden off Campbell's shoulders and keep him fresh, and vice versa.
Campbell is one of just seven active players with 100-plus career sacks (117.0). That's an incredible feat, especially when factoring in his positional value. Impressively, he's the only one of the bunch to clear the century mark that regularly lines up on the inside; the others are edge rushers.
Moreover, and perhaps most notably, Campbell has experience working under new Giants head coach John Harbaugh. The two spent three seasons together with the Baltimore Ravens from 2020 through 2022. Their preexisting connection makes the idea of the former landing in New York even more appealing.
