Giants ignore biggest roster concern in latest NFL mock draft
By Matt Sidney
At 2-6, the New York Giants are severely at risk of missing the playoffs.
It's been another season to forget for New York fans. The 2024 season has only further pushed the narrative that Giants quarterback Daniel Jones isn't the answer at quarterback. While he's played well at times in his career, the inconsistencies and erratic play rear their ugly heads too often for continued success.
The Giants' offense is holding the team back. Despite being 2-6, the defense has been strong. Sure, there have been some effort concerns, but overall this is a unit that can and will impose its will on opposing offenses.
As New York falls further out of the playoff picture, the focus drifts toward the 2025 NFL draft, particularly the quarterback position. This year's top prospects feature Cam Ward from Miami, Shedeur Sanders from Colorado, and Quinn Ewers of Texas.
Although all three are projected as first-round picks, Brent Sobleski’s recent top-10 mock draft at B/R has the G-Men going rogue. With the ninth pick, they brush aside concerns about New York’s future signal-caller.
New York Giants don't address QB position in latest mock draft
Instead of bringing in a future quarterback, the Giants elect to address their interior defensive line with defensive tackle Mason Graham from Michigan.
At first glance, it seems like an odd pick, given that the Giants already boast a stellar defensive front with Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. However, the prospect of adding Graham to create an even more dominant unit might be too tempting for the G-Men to pass up.
Sobleski argues, "A defensive tackle may not be the most obvious answer. Still, the value of landing Michigan's Mason Graham in the back half of the Top 10 to pair with Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns is too much to pass. If a quarterback is off the table, at least for one more season, the Giants can build their identity through a defensive front that can dominate opponents."
Mason Graham is very good at football. He's one of those players who elevates all teammates on the field. Although Michigan is having a tough season following Jim Harbaugh's departure, Graham has picked up right where he left off.
Please sit back and enjoy three minutes of Mason Graham highlights then try to convince yourself he wouldn't be an unreal fit in the Blue and Red.
A defensive interior of Lawrence and Graham could terrorize opposing offenses for years to come. He'd be a great fit here in New York and has the potential to put the Giants' defense in the elite bucket.
When a team can get a guy like Graham, they do it. The real concern for the Giants will be if he'll be available at the ninth pick.
Even though it might be tempting to find Daniel Jones' replacement, the last thing this organization should do is reach on a QB prospect who won't elevate the offense. That becomes more important with a top-10 pick. Imagine reaching on a signal-caller who isn't ready and the organization gets set back another three seasons or so - nightmare.
If New York sees Graham as the top prospect, they should go after him. Teams rarely find success drafting for immediate needs over choosing the best talent available.
