The New York Giants didn’t fall to the New Orleans Saints because they were outmatched. They lost in Week 5 because they imploded in every possible way, coughing up five straight possessions and unraveling what looked like a promising afternoon at Caesars Superdome. Turnovers dictated the game, and once things started slipping, they never found their footing again.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart made the mistakes that usually define a rookie quarterback’s worst day. Darius Slayton added to the problem with a drive-killing fumble. The defense eventually broke. And in the middle of it all, running back Cam Skattebo delivered the single moment that flipped the entire game. At the worst possible time, Skatt made a major mistake.
On second-and-seven from the Saints’ 12-yard line, early in the fourth quarter, the 23-year-old took the handoff and powered up the middle. The ball popped out, the Saints picked it up, and took it 86 yards to the house. The 14-point swing officially did them in — everyone felt it. And after the game, he made his thoughts clear with a simple social media post:
Sorry giants fans!!! I’ll be better for yall!!!! Love!!!

Giants still riding with Cam Skattebo after brutal Week 5 fumble
That kind of public accountability won’t do anything to change the outcome, but it says plenty about where his mindset is and why the staff still trusts him.
Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka backed him up on Monday, telling reporters:
"I’ve been really impressed over the last couple of weeks with how Skat has played… he’s been playing tough with his protector responsibility, blocking, then obviously as a runner… the intensity that he brings."Giants OC Mike Kafka
And the numbers back it up. Skattebo finished with 104 total yards on 21 touches, and his six receptions tied for the team lead. He’s now eclipsed 100 scrimmage yards in two of his last three games, signaling a changing of the guard in Big Blue’s backfield.
On the season, he’s rushed for 240 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 143 yards on 18 touches through the air.
There’s no panic inside the building, and there shouldn’t be outside it either. Skattebo’s workload will remain steady, and if anything, this is exactly the kind of moment that gives a rookie the edge he needs to wake up. It was a whole bunch of “welcome to the NFL” moments from the rookie class.
The Philadelphia Eagles are coming to town on a short week. There’s no time for overthinking or overreacting. Get the 23-year-old some new gloves and get the human-sized fire hydrant back on the field, ready to work.
