There was a lot to like about the New York Giants’ defense in Sunday night’s 28-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys. They completely dismantled Dallas’ supposed lethal offense, allowing just 244 total yards, holding the Cowboys to 3.8 yards per carry, not giving up a single play longer than 17 yards, and limiting them to just 23:20 of possession.
Underneath the hood, though, there were still some issues. And arguably the most up-in-the-air position group on the roster didn’t exactly leave Giants fans feeling any better about it.
The Giants are signing former Denver Broncos cornerback Jaden Robinson to the practice squad, reuniting the 25-year-old with defensive backs coach Addison Lynch, who coached him in Denver last year.
Reunions have pretty much been Big Blue’s thing this offseason, so what’s one more? Only this one isn’t nearly as interesting as, say, Odell Beckham Jr.’s return. What is interesting is why adding another corner -- even to the P-Squad -- suddenly makes some sense.
Giants’ cornerback room is already giving John Harbaugh something to worry about
No one’s suggesting Robinson is about to walk into East Rutherford and challenge for a spot on the 53-man roster. He went undrafted out of Oregon State in 2025 and spent his rookie season on Denver’s practice squad before being waived with an injury designation earlier this offseason.
While he's not coming aboard to be New York's next lockdown corner, the signing does come at a rather interesting time.
Deonte Banks briefly left Sunday’s win over Dallas with cramping issues, while Greg Newsome II also missed time getting checked for a concussion before eventually returning. Then on Wednesday, Banks and (surprisingly) Paulson Adebo were both off to the side, working with trainers.
Their health is obviously worth keeping an eye on heading into Monday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, but the group's collective Week 1 performance might be an even bigger reason for concern:
Player | |
|---|---|
Greg Newsome II | 40.4 |
Deonte Banks | 48.9 |
Paulson Adebo | 45.4 |
Dru Phillips | 31.2 |
Colton Hood | 61.1 |
Not great, Bob.
Hood was the only Giants corner to finish with a coverage grade above 50.0, while Phillips’ 31.2 was easily the lowest of the group after he was flagged for three defensive pass interference penalties.
Again, Robinson isn’t coming in to fix any of that. He’s never played a regular-season NFL snap, and there’s a reason he’s joining the P-Squad rather than the active roster.
Still, adding a 6-foot, 193-pound corner who already has some familiarity with Lynch gives the Giants another option at a position where healthy bodies could suddenly become pretty important. And after one week, healthy isn’t the only thing this cornerback room needs to get figured out.
