New York Giants' head coach John Harbaugh has smuggled in more than a few former Baltimore Ravens players this offseason. Isaiah Likely, Patrick Ricard, and Ar'Darius Washington are all set to help Harbaugh establish his winning culture with the G-Men.
After a fresh wave of cuts at the 53-man roster deadline, another former Raven has become available. Edge rusher David Ojabo, whom Harbaugh drafted in the second round in 2022, was let go by the Miami Dolphins. Harbaugh took a chance on his athleticism once, and he might be tempted to do so again.
But this is a second chance that the Giants can't afford to give. Ojabo hasn't lived up to his pre-draft potential, and there are no signs of a mid-career turnaround for the former top-50 pick.
Giants should stay away from former John Harbaugh pick David Ojabo
Ojabo came into the NFL at the peak of the "every fast, bendy edge rusher is worth a high draft pick" era. His tape at Michigan was limited, but the Ravens took a chance on his upside, using the 45th overall pick on him in 2022.
Harbaugh and his staff gave the young defender time to develop, keeping his role limited early on, but he never quite became the player they hoped he could be. In four years with the Ravens, Ojabo recorded just 4.5 total sacks and two tackles for loss. In 32 total appearances, he started in one game for Baltimore.
The Ravens had no interest in bringing the edge rusher back after his rookie contract expired, so he signed with the Miami Dolphins. Even in a Miami defense that needed talent, he couldn't make the cut. The Dolphins released him on deadline day.
The Giants may be an obvious landing spot for Ojabo. They only kept three edge rushers on the roster, and Harbaugh already has an established connection with the player. It could be the perfect second chance for a player who still has athletic upside.
But Big Blue should stay away from the 26-year-old defender. His lack of production over the last four years is enough evidence that a breakout probably isn't coming. While the Giants may not have many edge rushers on the roster, rookie linebackers Arvell Reese and Jack Kelly can help fill in as depth, and Chauncey Golston will see some time on the edge.
New York can let another team take a chance on Ojabo.
