John Harbaugh has fascinating fallback if Todd Monken waiting game backfires

It's always Weis to have a backup plan.

As the New York Giants wait on pins and needles for Todd Monken, another intriguing option is starting to generate some buzz.

The 59-year-old is waiting on the Cleveland Browns, whose interview process seems like the absolute worst, to finally wrap up their head coach search. It's down to Monk, Jim Schwartz, and Nate Scheelchase, with a decision coming any minute now. Be that as it may, new HC John Harbaugh must prepare for anything, meaning a Plan B to his Plan A.

Enter LSU's new offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis Jr.

Weis has had a meteoric rise since Lane Kiffin took a flier on the then-24-year-old at Florida Atlantic in 2018, naming him the offensive coordinator -- believed to be the youngest coordinator in modern D1-A football history. The pair parted ways, but came back together at Ole Miss in 2021, where the Jaxson Dart connection inevitably happened.

The Rebels’ new OC worked with Dart for three seasons, never finishing lower than third in total offense at Ole Miss -- and leading the SEC the past two years. That connection makes him the perfect fallback option if Monken ends up feeling Cleveland.

However, none of that measures up to the latest news coming out of Chuck's camp. In what might be even better than his Ole Miss connection with Dart -- certainly more hilarious -- Weis also recently turned down the Eagles’ OC job, seemingly because no one wants to inherit Jalen Hurts as their quarterback. This guy was born to bleed Blue.

John Harbaugh has two rising stars waiting if Todd Monken chooses Cleveland

Junior is the son of Charlie Weis Sr., who famously coached Notre Dame from 2005-09, before floundering at Kansas for three years, starting in 2012. It was at NDU that Weis Jr. got into coaching. He wasn't there in any official capacity, but he was involved with the program in a limited capacity as a youth.

Trusting Weis Jr. and his inexperience, especially at the NFL level, could end up being a major setback for Harby. Luckily, there’s another guy with Giants ties he could pivot to.

If Harbs decides Weis isn't ready for the major leagues, Denver Broncos pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb could be a compelling option. The 31-year-old has some fun history with the G-Men.

Then-GM Jerry Reese selected the former Golden Bear in the third round of the 2017 Draft as the presumed successor to Eli Manning. He was waived the following year after not playing a single snap in Giants Blue. But as fate would have it, the prodigal son returned in 2022, making his first and only NFL start in Week 18 against the Eagles.

Webb's done amazing work with Bo Nix in Denver. Because of that, he's getting looks at HC, with the Las Vegas Raiders looking like the frontrunner.

No matter how you slice it, the Giants can’t really lose. It’s either an established juggernaut in Todd Monken or one of the two best rising offensive minds in football. Either way, things are looking up in North Jersey.
