The NFC East is a mess. There's no polite way to put it. Somehow, the New York Giants lead the division despite losing their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury in the second week of the season. After the disaster that was the Giants' tie against the Washington Commanders in Week 5, it's starting to feel like none of the teams in the division want the title.
For the Giants' rivals, there may be consequences looming. The other three head coaches in the division are already hearing calls for their jobs after disappointing starts to the year.
John Harbaugh has been the Giants' head coach for nine months, and he could soon become the division's elder statesman.
Giants may have forced Commanders to fire Dan Quinn
Adam Schefter dropped an ominous note for Dan Quinn after the Commanders inexplicably fumbled away what should have been an overtime win against the Giants. On ESPN's "Get Up," he said, "I would imagine in time there’s going to be consequences from this game.”
The Commanders haven't made any decisions to fire Quinn yet, but he's likely on a short leash moving forward. His mismanagement of the tie with the Giants pushed Washington to the bottom of the NFC East in a season where they were expected to be competitive.
If Quinn can't turn the ship around quickly, he might not last to the end of the year.
Giants kicked off a disastrous Cowboys season that could end Brian Schottenheimer's tenure early
When the Giants pulled off their Week 1 upset over the Dallas Cowboys, it was seen as a bump in the road for Brian Schottenheimer's squad. Dak Prescott, the Cowboys' receiver duo, and defensive coordinator Christian Parker still commanded some faith from their fan base.
The Cowboys' offense has been elite, but their defense has been the worst in the league so far. While it's not Schottenheimer's job to coach the defense, the responsibility for the team as a whole falls on his shoulders.
Jerry Jones is typically more hesitant than most owners to fire his head coach, especially in the middle of the season. That may be the only thing keeping Schottenheimer in Dallas beyond this year.
Giants can push Eagles' chaos into disaster territory in Week 9
The Philadelphia Eagles are collapsing before our eyes. After losing Lane Johnson to retirement and trading Cam Jurgens, they seem ready to begin a full-scale rebuild. General manager Howie Roseman's job is likely safe, but Nick Sirianni might not be so lucky.
Sirianni is a Super Bowl-winning head coach, but his results over the last season and a half have been disappointing relative to the talent on his roster. If the Eagles are starting over, it will likely be without him.
The Giants don't play the Eagles until Week 9, at which point the landscape of the NFC East could look dramatically different. But if the Eagles continue to struggle in the coming weeks, that game could push the Eagles to make a decision on Sirianni's future.
