Fresh off their bye week, the New York Giants are gearing up for their Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, looking to maintain their comfortable lead in the NFC East.

All things considered, it has been a very pleasant start to the John Harbaugh era in New York, despite the Giants having lost their franchise quarterback, Jaxson Dart, and top pass rusher, Brian Burns, to season-ending injuries.

The Giants appear to have solved their Jaxson Dart dilemma, with J.J. McCarthy seemingly resurrecting his career after his near fourth-quarter heroics against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6 and an impressive overtime win against the Houston Texans in Week 7. As for their defensive dilemma, Big Blue is reportedly looking for external help, as they are also without veteran linebacker Tremaine Edmunds for the season.

After Harbaugh said he left a voicemail to the Tennessee Titans, who traded Pro Bowl pass rusher Jeffrey Simmons to the Chicago Bears, Harbaugh seemed to admit that Big Blue might look to acquire a defensive pass rusher with the deadline a week away. Could this trade proposal involving a veteran pass rusher with ties to a Harbaugh head coach be a realistic move for the Giants?

Trade proposal has Giants acquiring Khalil Mack from the Los Angeles Chargers

In an article for CBS Sports, Bryan DeArdo proposed a trade that sent veteran linebacker Khalil Mack along with tight end Charlie Kolar and running back Keaton Mitchell to the Giants in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick, a 2028 fifth-round pick, and running back Devin Singletary.

The Giants lead the NFC East despite having one of the league's worst pass rushers. They also need help at running back and pass catcher," DeArdo wrote. "John Harbaugh is familiar with both Kolar and Mitchell dating back to his time with the Ravens. Jim Harbaugh would get Singletary (who, like Johnston, would benefit from a change of scenery) and draft picks to help jumpstart the Chargers' inevitable rebuild."

It has been a miserable season for the Los Angeles Chargers under Jim Harbaugh. They remain the only winless team in the NFL at 0-7 and appear headed for a rebuild. So why not a trade between the Harbaugh brothers?

As DeArdo noted, New York's pass rush has been one of the league's worst this season, largely because of Burns' absence. While Mack's best days in the NFL are likely behind him, the 35-year-old still has three sacks this year.

Before suffering his season-ending shoulder injury, Edmunds was leading the G-Men with two sacks. Cornerback Dru Phillips also has two, and then the next closest is rookie linebacker Arvell Reese, who has only 1.5 sacks. Adding a veteran and future Hall of Fame pass rusher like Khalil Mack would certainly benefit the Giants' decimated pass rush.

As for adding Mitchell, his experience with Harbaugh during their time together with the Baltimore Ravens makes the most sense as to why he would be included in the deal. Not to mention, New York's No. 1 running back, Cam Skattebo, is still nursing a hamstring injury he suffered against Houston. Tyrone Tracy Jr. is also on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. So, it goes without saying that the Giants are thin at running back.

The Chargers are going nowhere this season and are expected to tear down their roster between now and the trade deadline, with Khalil Mack as the top trade target for teams across the league. If the Giants want to clinch their first division title since the 2011-2012 season, bringing in Mack could go a long way in helping them do so.
