Did the New York Giants find a gem during the undrafted free agency frenzy in the form of a kicker? Post-draft, the Giants signed Dominic Zvada, the kicker from Michigan, who many people actually thought would get drafted in last week’s NFL Draft.
Zvada was a kicker for Michigan and was thought to go in the 6th or 7th round, potentially. Some beat writers and experts believed the Giants should draft a kicker because of years of kicking woes.
New head coach John Harbaugh continued his complete overhaul of the special teams unit, and now the Giants are up to three kickers currently on the roster. Even coming off a down year, Zvada is known for both his accuracy and his power.
Dominic Zvada gives Giants another shot at fixing long-standing issue
Zvada only made 68% of his field goals last season at Michigan, but he didn’t miss a single extra point, and his 2024 season was historic, going 7-for-7 on field goals over 50 yards, including three from 56 yards. For his career, the former Wolverine has hit at an 83% clip, and if you have any questions about his leg, there are clips of him casually making 70-yard field goals.
Big Blue still has Ben Sauls from last year, who stepped in admirably, as well as Jason Sanders, who was a Pro Bowl-level kicker for the Dolphins before a hip injury cost him all of the 2025 season. The kicking competition is wide open for Zvada, so if he can make the most of the opportunity, the Giants may have finally found some consistency at kicker.
New York’s kicking situation between 2024 and early 2026 became a revolving door defined by injuries, poor decisions, and costly mistakes. Veteran Graham Gano’s recurring hamstring, back, and groin issues made him unreliable, and the team struggled to find stability behind him. At one point, they didn’t even elevate a replacement, forcing punter Jamie Gillan into kicking duties.
By 2025, things only got worse. The G-Men cycled through unlimited options, including Jude McAtamney and Younghoe Koo, with misses piling up and even a botched attempt on Monday Night Football becoming a viral low point. Sauls finished the season perfect on short kicks but wasn’t trusted from distance. Now, with Sanders and Zvada in the mix, the Giants are clearly trying to reset the position and finally find a long-term answer.
