Giants must avoid making a costly mistake with former first-round receiver

Don’t let the Giants’ many injuries fool you otherwise.

Let Odell Beckham Jr.’s return be enough proof that the New York Giants have a serious wide receiver problem.

Malik Nabers is still recovering from knee surgery, and Darius Slayton isn’t participating in offseason workouts while rehabilitating from a sports hernia. Gunner Olszewski’s season ended before it began, courtesy of a torn Achilles.

Enter Beckham, along with Braxton Berrios and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Not exactly the most imposing trio in 2026.

Concerns continue mounting regarding Nabers’ knee potentially keeping him out beyond Week 1, and it won’t be long before the speculation about adding another receiver via trade formally begins.

If or when Panthers receiver Xavier Legette becomes available, the Giants would be wise to stay far, far away.

The Giants must avoid trading for Panthers receiver Xavier Legette

Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton floated the idea of Carolina potentially trading Legette, the No. 32 pick in 2024, ahead of Week 1.

Although Legette is only entering his third season, he’s mustered just 860 yards through 31 games. The Panthers added Tennessee receiver Chris Brazzell II in the third round, and Jalen Coker has developed into a productive rotational option.

The group of Beckham, Berrios, and Smith-Schuster isn’t flashy at this stage in their careers, but all are greater fits than Legette.

That’s nothing against Legette, at least from a talent perspective. Unfortunately for Legette, he plays in a Panthers offense where Bryce Young only needs Tetairoa McMillan and competent depth players.

As a former first-round pick, Legette isn’t a good fit in that kind of system. He’d benefit far more by joining a contender like the Bills or Chiefs, who could immediately work him into the offense, given their own receiver issues.

The Giants don’t have that kind of time or space, even as their injury report grows daily.

Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III, and rookie Malachi Fields are all expected to compete for meaningful Week 1 snaps. Of the three new arrivals, Smith-Schuster should have the highest odds of cracking the 53-man roster.

Beckham is a 33-year-old who has played one full season since the start of 2022. Berrios turns 31 in October, and his days of steadily contributing as a receiver and returner are long behind him.

Legette doesn’t make the Giants better, and there is no path to consistent playing time, especially not if Slayton remains on schedule.

There is no indication that the Panthers intend to move Legette within the coming weeks, and they can always decline his fifth-year option to avoid guaranteeing his 2028 salary.

But if the Panthers are open to trading Legette, the Giants shouldn’t bother making the call. For as intriguing a bounce-back candidate as he might be, Legette just isn’t worth it right now.
