Giants' Najee Harris visit signals RB panic fans saw coming all along

The New York Giants didn't waste any time responding to a mediocre performance from their backup running backs in the preseason opener, bringing veteran Najee Harris in for a visit on Monday, according to league insider Adam Schefter.

Harris has been fully cleared after suffering a torn Achilles tendon early in the 2025 season. He's two years removed from being a productive back in the NFL, but he would still be a major upgrade over the depth that the G-Men currently have on the roster.

After how poorly the running backs beyond the top three of Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary played on Saturday, a move like this had to happen.

Najee Harris is the RB addition the Giants can't afford to pass up

Skattebo and Singletary were solid in the preseason opener. Tracy had his hiccups (one of them sending Jaxson Dart to the blue medical tent), but his spot on the roster is safe. After those three left the field, things got ugly in Big Blue's backfield.

Eric Gray, Dante Miller, and Damon Bankston combined for 16 carries, 40 yards, and no scores. Miller had the longest run of the group, managing six yards on one of his carries. The Giants were waiting for one of those backs to separate themselves from the pack, but all three failed to impress. At this point, it wouldn't be surprising to see all three players get cut before the regular season.

Adding Harris to the group makes sense, even if his role in Matt Nagy's offense would be limited. While he's not especially explosive, he's a consistent runner. He picks up the yardage that is blocked for him.

A former first-round pick, Harris eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first four seasons.

The 28-year-old is a solid pass-blocker, too. In his last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he only allowed one pressure. Tracy's pass-protection mishap against the Vikings showed that the Giants could use that kind of skill set in the backfield.

An Achilles injury can end a career, especially for a running back. We don't know how close to the Steelers version of himself Harris currently is, but that's exactly why the Giants brought him in for a visit. If he looks like he has fully recovered from the injury, he would be worth signing for a team in need of some added backfield depth.
