Now that Giants fans have had some time to digest the Matt Nagy news, the focus shifts to rounding out the rest of the coaching staff. With the coordinator roles finally filled, head coach John Harbaugh can start pairing his top lieutenants with position coaches who actually fit what he’s trying to build and can help bring his vision to life.
And that brings us to arguably the most important opening left on the staff: the offensive line coach.
The stars looked like they were aligning when Jeff Stoutland had a falling-out with the Philadelphia Eagles on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles' offensive line coach and run game coordinator would have been the perfect candidate, but it was reported shortly after that he wasn't expected to coach this season.
That leaves Harbaugh with one of the most obvious slam-dunk options left: Juan Castillo.
All signs point to Juan Castillo as the Giants’ next OL coach
Castillo checks a lot of boxes as Big Blue's offensive line coach -- he's been coaching it for over 30 years. The biggest sell on the veteran coach is that he's already familiar with Harbaugh and Nagy, as he spent years with Harbs in Philly under Andy Reid and was in Baltimore under Harbs for five seasons (2012-16) and worked under Nagy in Chicago for two years (2020-21).
Funny enough, he even crossed paths with Giants assistant OL coach Greg Newsome during his time at Michigan in 2025. That's a lot of familiarity.
Castillo is known as a "no-nonsense" guy. He's not there to make friends, just develop talent and deliver Pro Bowl-caliber linemen. That's great news for the Giants, who are likely staring down an offensive line teardown this offseason. Left tackle Andrew Thomas figures to be the only linemen safe heading into next season.
They could use a coach of Castillo’s caliber to bring some immediate cohesion back to the group, especially after finally finding it last season before Harbaugh blew everything up. Pro Football Focus ranked the Giants’ offensive line as a top-10 unit in 2025, yet Harbs still moved on from the coach who helped get them there the moment he arrived.
Had Harbs not fired Big Blue's former OL coach, Carmen Bricillo, he'd be all set with a strong coach who helped turn New York's struggling offensive line around in two seasons working under former HC Brian Daboll.
Even with fan support, front-office backing, and yes, a little family lobbying, he chose to move on from Bric. Missing out on former Ravens OL coach George Warhop, who followed Todd Monken to Cleveland, and with Jeff Stoutland likely taking a year off after his Philly fallout, Castillo suddenly feels like the cleanest and most realistic option left on the board.
Castillo was just hired to become Syracuse’s new offensive line coach for the 2026 season, but jumping back to the NFL for one last run might be too good to pass up. At 66, this realistically feels like his final window to get back to the league, and the Giants check every box. Familiar faces, a clear need, and a head coach who knows exactly what he’d be getting. It almost makes too much sense.
