Devin Singletary has become the man out in the New York Giants' running back room since Tyrone Tracy Jr.'s return from a dislocated shoulder. However, as the saying goes, one person's trash is another's treasure, making the former a name to monitor ahead of the NFL's trade deadline.
With Singletary ostensibly becoming an afterthought in New York, recouping any value for him makes sense. He's a logical target for anyone in search of a low-cost backfield spark, with one prime suitor taking shape: the New England Patriots.
CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported that he believes the Patriots might look to add a back. His intel comes just days after Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said they may explore bringing in a "depth piece." Put the two insiders' intel together, and it leads you to Singletary and the G-Men.
Patriots just became the Giants' ideal Devin Singletary trade partner
Singletary was recently mentioned as someone rival front office executives and coaches "believe could be available," per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The logic is rather straightforward, considering Tracy and burgeoning rookie Cam Skattebo are here to stay as the present and future in the Big Apple. Consequently, the Giants have an expendable asset on their hands that fits the description of a player the Pats are looking for.
Why the Patriots spent a second-round pick on TreVeyon Henderson this past offseason just to bury him deeper down the pecking chart is anyone's guess. Nevertheless, Singletary is the hard-hat, lunch pail type of guy they're ostensibly trying to replace after losing Antonio Gibson to a torn ACL in Week 5.
It wouldn't take a lot to pry Singletary from the Giants and there's minimal strings attached to him beyond 2025, which works in New England's favor. He has a potential out in his contract after this season that leaves behind a palatable $1.25 million dead cap hit. The flexibility enables the Pats to bring in a proven commodity without sacrificing its long-term outlook.
Moreover, Singletary is an established veteran who's can contribute in multiple areas of the game. The seventh-year pro is capable receiver, posting at least 29 receptions annually when operating as the primary runner on his team from 2019 to 2023. He's also formidable in pass protection, which will always make him valuable somewhere.
Through seven contests this season, Singletary has amassed 84 scoreless rushing yards on 26 carries, "adding" two catches for zero yards.
