The New York Giants' priority this offseason will be drafting a franchise quarterback at this year's NFL Draft, but that doesn't necessarily mean Joe Schoen and Big Blue's front office will select a signal-caller in the first round.
While the Giants hold the No. 3 pick in this year's draft, the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, who sit ahead of Big Blue in the draft order, are also expected to prioritize drafting a quarterback.
If the Titans and Browns both select a quarterback in the first round, they’ll likely take Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami's Cam Ward. This scenario leaves the Giants with several options at No. 3.
If the Giants miss out on Sanders or Ward, they could consider three other quarterbacks in the draft, though none are projected to go as high as third overall.
One potential plan for the G-Men could be to draft Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter in the first round and wait for a quarterback to fall to them on Day 2. Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Ole Miss’s Jaxson Dart are both viable options to address their need under center.
Another intriguing option for the Giants is Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who announced on Wednesday that he will declare for the NFL Draft.
Quinn Ewers could be the Giants' next franchise QB
After being ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the 2021 class, Ewers graduated high school early to commit to Ohio State. However, his career as a Buckeye was short-lived. He lasted just one semester in Columbus before entering the transfer portal.
In December 2021, Ewers announced he was transferring to Texas, where he was named the Longhorns' starting quarterback entering the 2022 season. Over the next three years, he solidified himself as Texas’s leader under center.
Ewers helped revive Texas’s program during his collegiate career. As a three-year starter, he led the Longhorns to a 27-9 overall record, the 2023 Big 12 championship, and the school's only two appearances in the College Football Playoff semifinals. He amassed 9,128 passing yards and 68 touchdowns during that span.
The 21-year-old is projected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick in this year's NFL Draft. If Ewers is still on the board when the Giants are on the clock, Schoen shouldn’t hesitate to select him. Ewers has the potential to lead New York's offense for the long haul.
