The New York Giants’ quarterback room in the 2024 season was considered by many to be one of the worst ever assembled. Four professional quarterbacks combined for a grand total of 15 passing touchdowns in 17 games—an accomplishment that inspired little to no confidence in that group last year.
It’s why the team emphasized upgrading the quarterback position in the offseason, and why the team completely revamped the room, going from Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, and Tim Boyle to Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, and DeVito. Having a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, a former No. 1 overall pick, and a current first-rounder as your new QB room should earn the Giants some respect heading into 2025, right?
Well, kind of. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report ranked the worst quarterback rooms heading into the season. The good news? The Giants didn’t land in the bottom five. The bad news? They were still mentioned — listed as an honorable mention alongside the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Giants quarterback situation isn’t great, but it’s not a disaster
Despite losing his last five starts and a playoff game, Wilson still looked competent enough to warrant interest around the league and earn another shot to start in 2025. He was tabbed from the start as the Giants’ Week 1 quarterback. Even with the signings of Winston and the drafting of Dart, Wilson is still viewed as the starter for now.
Wilson will also get a chance to revitalize a Giants offense that’s been near the bottom of the league rankings the past couple of seasons. After starting last year as a backup, he took over and threw 16 touchdowns in 11 games for the Steelers, helping them reach the AFC Wild Card Round. Now, Wilson will be leading an offense full of young talent—most notably Malik Nabers, who racked up over 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns last season despite the previously mentioned dreadful quarterback situation.
If Wilson struggles or gets injured, Winston would likely be next up. In seven starts for the Browns in 2024, he threw for 13 touchdowns and 2,100 yards. Winston is still capable of starting if needed, though his value may lie in mentoring Dart from the sidelines. Still, he showed he can step in and play at a moment’s notice if called upon.
Dart remains the mystery. But with that unknown comes plenty of intrigue and excitement for the franchise and its fans. He’s considered the future of the team, and a lot of fans are eager to see when he’ll eventually take the reins of the Giants' offense. If he looks anything like the quarterback we saw at Ole Miss, where he threw for over 4,000 yards and nearly 30 touchdowns in 2024, there’s plenty of reason to be excited.
Maybe the G-Men just need to show the football world that their starting quarterback can move the ball efficiently and win games consistently, something that’s been few and far between in recent years. Doing that could restore some respect for the quarterback room in East Rutherford, the way it once was when New York was a consistent winner and playoff team. As they say, winning cures all. By this time next year, the Giants’ quarterback room might not even be on this list. A few more wins could go a long way.
