After an impressive first two days in Green Bay, Joe Schoen and the New York Giants started Day Three of the NFL Draft by selecting Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo with the 105th pick.

Skattebo is an exciting prospect who rushed for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns on 293 attempts. He also recorded 45 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns with the Sun Devils. He finished the season earning First-Team AP All-American and First-Team All-Big 12 Conference honors, setting school records in both rushing and scrimmage yards.

The move comes a year after the front office drafted Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Tracy Jr. took over as the team’s lead back in Week 5 after veteran Devin Singletary suffered an injury. The rookie impressed in his opportunities and became the Giants’ starter by Week 8.

With Skattebo now joining the Giants and Tracy Jr. entering this season as the starting running back, Singletary will not receive the same workload he had at the beginning of last season. We can expect fewer snaps for the veteran, which could eventually result in Big Blue looking to move on from Singletary.

Devin Singletary and Eric Gray’s roster spots could be in jeopardy

If the Giants cut Singletary after June 1, the team would save $1.5 million. The 27-year-old has a potential out in 2026 and is scheduled to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent in 2027, but he could also be traded before then.

The Giants brought in Singletary as Saquon Barkley’s replacement last offseason; however, with the emergence of Tracy Jr. and the potential of Skattebo, the veteran’s days in New York may be limited.

Singletary might not be the only running back impacted by the Giants drafting Skattebo. Big Blue’s fourth-string running back and special teams specialist Eric Gray will also face fewer opportunities in the running game next season.

Gray was primarily used as a returner on special teams but has had a few chances to contribute at running back over the past few seasons. He, too, is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 — but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Giants looked to trade him before then.

In the meantime, Big Blue fans can be excited about the future of this offense with Jaxson Dart coming in as the quarterback of the future, Malik Nabers emerging as one of the league’s top wide receivers, and now a young, exciting running back tandem featuring Tracy Jr. and Skattebo.

One player who is undoubtedly excited about Skattebo’s addition is quarterback Russell Wilson, who quickly reacted to the pick on X by quote-tweeting the Giants’ post:

“Skattttt!!!”
