Giants staff already getting poached before John Harbaugh coaches a snap

That was fast.

Never let them know your next move. That’s probably what now-former New York Giants assistant defensive line coach Matt Robinson was thinking this weekend.

Back in early February, news broke that Robinson would be leaving the Baltimore Ravens to join John Harbaugh in East Rutherford as Big Blue's assistant defensive line coach. It felt like another familiar face following Harbs up I-95. On Friday, the move finally became official when the Giants announced the completion of their coaching staff.

And then... 48 hours later, it wasn’t.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday evening that Robinson had a change of heart and would instead be joining the Las Vegas Raiders as their secondary coach. Schefter added there was no animosity from the Giants’ side and that the organization supported the decision:

Life comes at you fast. One day you’re officially on the Giants’ staff. Two days later you’re headed to Sin City. Who'da thought?

Giants assistants already getting poached before season even begins

Robinson's tenure in North Jersey will forever be remembered. The profound impact he had over the long weekend, after being officially announced as the team’s assistant defensive line coach, will be talked about for decades to come. Maybe... probably not.

Sarcasm aside, this is a small but interesting development for a regime that hasn’t even coached a practice yet, let alone a game. Harbaugh’s staff is barely finalized, and already other teams are circling. That’s either a testament to the caliber of coaches he’s been assembling or a reminder that good assistants don’t stay available for long.

Robinson spent the last five seasons in Baltimore, working with the outside linebackers and assisting the defensive line in 2024. In 2023, he served as a defensive quality control coach, primarily working with the defensive front after originally joining the Ravens in 2021 as a defensive coaching fellow.

In 2022, Robinson worked alongside new Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, which could help explain how this all changed so quickly. Before landing in Baltimore, he spent four seasons in the college ranks at his alma mater, Maryland, and Connecticut, building up his coaching résumé.

So the Giants technically only “had” him for a long weekend. If this is what happens before the first offseason workout, imagine what it’ll look like when the actual season rolls around. There's clearly a changing of the guard in New York, and seemingly everyone wants a piece of it.
