After losing Wan'Dale Robinson in free agency, the New York Giants could be staring down the perfect start to the 2026 NFL Draft at receiver. They have major needs all over the roster, but John Harbaugh's draft philosophy has always been to take the best player available regardless of need.
The best player on the board at No. 5 will likely be Ohio State defensive back Caleb Downs, who would instantly set the tone for the secondary with Dennard Wilson coming in. They need to address WR and OL afterward, but luckily, Joe Schoen and the G-Men are preparing for that outcome later on.
According to NFL Draft guru Ryan Fowler, the Giants are hosting Texas A&M receiver KC Concepcion for a top 30 visit, and he could be an option for New York with the 37th pick. Concepcion has been regarded as a likely first-round pick, but there could be a chance he slips outside the top 32 picks.
And in the event he does, Big Blue better be all over this. At the moment, their WR2 is Darnell Mooney, and he's just not the answer to this team's problems. They need someone who can complement Malik Nabers, and Concepcion is exactly that, while Downs, despite his rumored medical issues, would elevate the secondary.
If the New York Giants are able to draft both KC Concepcion and Caleb Downs, they would be the biggest winner of the NFL Draft
As a lifelong Giants fan, if they are able to walk away from the first two rounds with Downs and Concepcion, I might be the happiest person in the tri-state area. This draft would be centered around two blue-chip prospects who I absolutely love, who both will fill a major roster need from the get-go.
As I mentioned, the Giants' WR depth chart behind Nabers is pretty brutal now that Robinson is in Tennessee. Mooney and Calvin Austin aren't much more than situational deep threats, while Isaiah Hodgins is just average. And Jalin Hyatt, well they better get rid of this guy because I'm so sick of him.
Concepcion recently underwent knee surgery, so even though his medicals may be a minor red flag, it could benefit the Giants in a major way. They pick early enough in the second round that they could trade back into Round 1 if need be, but there's a real chance that he's able to fall right into their lap.
The 21-year-old logged a career-high 919 yards and nine scores in his lone season at Texas A&M, in which he established himself as one of the best wideouts in the nation. He's an explosive return man, too, so his game-breaking speed could not only help the Giants on offense, but also on special teams.
Downs is going to be a game-changer on defense, and Concepcion will be the same on offense. He's an electric player with the ball in his hands that can either play inside the slot or on the outside, and I know that Matt Nagy would find ways to get creative with him and help Jaxson Dart take a Year 2 leap.
One at five and the other at 37 would be the perfect start to Harbaugh's first draft in New York. So hopefully this comes to fruition next month, compared to taking Makai Lemon or Carnell Tate a round earlier.
