Giants swing from one extreme to another with perfectly ironic 192nd pick

The New York Giants didn’t have to sit with their head-scratching Bobby Jamison-Travis pick for long. Six picks later, they were back on the clock and selected Illinois offensive lineman J.C. Davis with the 192nd pick, and this one feels like a much-needed bounce-back.

After what went down at 186, this felt like the front office realized it drafted more for need than going best player available, and immediately tried to get that strategy back on track.

And it's hard not to have a laugh at Davis' selection when you take a look at the scouting report. The G-Men just cut swing tackle James Hudson earlier this offseason after a short, chaotic run that was defined by penalties and, well... fighting people and throwing punches. So naturally, they select his replacement by drafting a lineman whose biggest flaw is -- wait for it -- not having much of a punch at all.

Hello, irony.

Giants select Illinois OL J.C. Davis with 192nd pick in 2026 NFL Draft

Davis isn’t being brought in to fight for snaps anytime soon, and that's okay. Both parties understand that. This is about adding someone who’s played a ton of football and can become a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency backup if Andrew Thomas or Jermaine Eluemunor go down.

He started 49 straight games between New Mexico and Illinois, which is a testament to how durable he is -- which is arguably the most important trait of a backup.

He played tackle in college, but there's a possibility of kicking inside. It'll be interesting to see how Big Blue uses 10th overall pick Francis Mauigoa and second-year lineman Marcus Mbow along the front. That'll give fans a clearer picture of where the 6-foot-5, 320-pounder plays.

The hands hang-up is real. Hudson couldn’t stop throwing punches. Davis needs to actually land his. Somewhere in the middle is probably what the Giants have been looking for.

After 192, this is the kind of value that turns good teams into great ones. We are so back.

But they’re not done just yet. They're right back on the clock at 193, which gives them another shot to stack a solid pick on top of this one. If they find some good value again, it'll be an A+ draft across the board.
