It has been rumored that the New York Giants will be very active at this year's trade deadline, with several players potentially on the move and the team looking to add a top wide receiver after star wideout Malik Nabers will miss the remainder of the season.
With the G-Men sitting at 2-5 through the first seven weeks, and looking to keep their playoff hopes alive, the franchise will have to improve the roster and make the necessary moves to start stacking wins.
Over the last few weeks, Giants fans have been excited about the possibility of trading for a top wide receiver, such as Jaylen Waddle, Jakobi Meyers, or Chris Olave. Still, several experts expect Big Blue to stand pat at the deadline and not swing for the fences to acquire any offensive weapons for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. Just ask Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic.
The Athletic says the Giants will stand pat at this year's trade deadline
The Athletic recently weighed in on what they believe all 32 teams will do at this year's trade deadline. Carroll stated that she isn't sure what NY will do, suggesting the G-Men will "watch the trade deadline craze from afar or if the loss will prompt selling considerations."
She suggested that if Big Blue had won its Week 7 matchup against the Denver Broncos, that would've only increased the buzz around trading for a top receiver. Still, because they're 2-5 and recently blew a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter, she says it could change their outlook and put a hold on their plans for a trade.
Despite the loss, Carroll said the offense wasn't bad at all, and that Dart was impressive in finding his tight ends for plenty of help. However, with a depleted wideout room, many fans would disagree.
Nabers suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 4, and Darius Slayton has dealt with ongoing hamstring injuries this season, leaving Brian Daboll's offense with Wan'Dale Robinson and Theo Johnson as their top pass catchers.
They've also utilized Lil'Jordan Humphrey, who was recently elevated from the practice squad, and Daniel Bellinger as well. Not to mention, Jalin Hyatt is also getting some snaps, although he hasn't contributed much this season.
Schoen recently signed veteran wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III after the Atlanta Falcons released him, but he isn't expected to play a significant role, and the signing is primarily for depth.
So, while New York does have options, they aren't the best, and if the front office wants to provide its 22-year-old signal-caller with a top pass catcher to continue to help his development this season and stay competitive against their upcoming opponents, they should pick up the phone and swing a deal for a difference-maker.
