The New York Giants spent the better part of seven years asking Dexter Lawrence to do just about everything as their defensive cornerstone. Stop the run, rush the passer, eat double teams, clean up everyone else’s mess. You name it, Sexy Dexy probably had a hand in it.
Now that he’s playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, apparently the Giants have discovered the concept of giving their star defensive tackle some help. Funny how that works.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Tampa Bay Buccaneers star defensive tackle Vita Vea is on New York’s radar ahead of the Nov. 10 trade deadline. The Bucs reportedly aren’t expected to move the 347-pound wrecking ball since they've started winning football games again, but that hasn’t stopped John Harbaugh and Co. from dreaming big after missing out on Jeffery Simmons.
And honestly? I love it.
Giants’ Vita Vea pursuit could unlock an even better version of D.J. Reader
D.J. Reader might be the biggest surprise of the Giants’ 2026 season, which is saying something considering this team is sitting atop the NFC East at 4-2-1 without Jaxson Dart under center or Brian Burns leading the pass rush.
The 32-year-old signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal this offseason, and somehow, New York might’ve landed the biggest bargain in football. Reader currently owns a ridiculous 90.4 Pro Football Focus grade, ranking **checks notes** first among all defensive linemen. He’s third against the run (85.5) and fourth in pass-rush grade (83.8).
And here’s the kicker: He’s doing all of that with a skeleton crew.
The G-Men have struggled to find reliable players next to Reader, leaving him to shoulder an unfair amount of responsibility. Sound familiar?
Lawrence spent years in a similar situation. New York let Dalvin Tomlinson walk in 2021 due to budget constraints, traded Leonard Williams in 2023 for the same reason, and used one top-three-round draft pick on an interior defensive lineman between selecting Lawrence in 2019 and trading him away this past offseason. That pick was Darius Alexander in 2025, and we all know how that’s going.
Now imagine the upgrade of all upgrades, Vea, next to Reader, forming the best one-two punch on Big Blue's defensive line since the days of Dex and Big Cat.
We’re talking about damn near 680 pounds of USDA Choice beef making life absolutely miserable for opposing offensive lines. For a Giants defense that hasn't been able to stop the run since I was an accountant... which was a while ago.
Of course, there’s the small matter of actually getting Tampa Bay to trade him. The Buccaneers are very much in the NFC South race, Vea carries a hefty contract through 2027, and New York isn’t exactly swimming in draft picks. So this might be more wishful thinking than anything else. But crazier things have happened.
After failing to land Simmons and now being publicly interested in Vea, it has become obvious that the G-Men understand Reader can’t -- and shouldn't -- do everything himself, even if his PFF grades suggest he can.
It’s a little unfortunate that Lawrence never got this kind of urgency from the front office while he was here. But I can only feel so bad for so long. Maybe things would’ve played out differently if he had. But that’s Cincy's problem now.
Reader has been everything the Giants could’ve hoped for and more. If New York can somehow land Vea without emptying the draft cupboard, give me the two-man wrecking crew, and let’s see how far this thing can go. Super Bowl LXI, anyone?
