With the 2026 Draft officially in the rearview, the clock is already ticking on 2027, and early buzz says that class is going to be loaded. But they say that every year.
The ’26 class was widely considered one of the weaker ones in recent years, which makes the monster haul the New York Giants walked away with all the more impressive. I guess this is life with John Harbaugh running the show. Feels nice. But if there’s one thing we already know about Harbaugh, it’s that he’s not going to sit around feeling good about one good weekend.
Especially not when somewhere out there, there’s a defensive back waiting to be taken in the first round, just begging for Harby to get his fix.
After taking Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa in his first draft in North Jersey, the 63-year-old goes right back to his roots and targets Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV (Go, Dawgs), who looks ready to take over as a true lockdown corner in Athens this year and push for the title of the most talented defensive back in the class.
You can see where this is going.
Georgia CB Ellis Robinson IV looks like the (way too early) perfect fit for Giants' secondary
For those unaware of how Harbaugh operates, he took a defensive back in the first round in three of his last four drafts with the Ravens. It’s sort of become his thing, but he obviously wasn’t able to do that this year.
He was able to land Tennessee corner Colton Hood early in the second, but that’s only going to scratch his itch so much. Which is why Robinson feels like he could be on his way to East Rutherford next April. Well, that, and the outlook for the secondary is horrifically bleak.
Paulson Adebo’s situation could get weird. After an underwhelming -- and expensive -- first season with New York, he's on borrowed time. Cutting him after next season opens up $14 million (they'd have to eat $6.3 million in dead cap), which becomes a much easier decision with a guy like Robinson on standby.
Then there's the Deonte Banks experience. The good news is, he's probably out of the picture when the 2027 Draft rolls around, unless they pick up his $12.6 million fifth-year option, which would honestly be more surprising than Evan Neal coming back this offseason. And with Greg Newsome’s one-year deal off the books too, it’s Hood and endless possibilities, potentially starting with Robinson.
Aside from Harbs' apparent obsession with Round 1 DBs, Robinson gives them a legit CB1 profile with the size and ball skills to hold down the outside in Dennard Wilson's scheme. He’s already producing at a high level at UGA, and with the way Big Blue's secondary is trending, it wouldn’t take much for him to walk in and become the best corner in the room.
A top corner pairing of Robinson and Hood could feed families.
If next year goes the way it looks like it will right now, asking Harbaugh to pass on a corner in the first round, with the cornerback room that empty, feels laughably unrealistic.
