Just a few days ago, the New York Giants' fan base was thrown off with some unforseen news on star wide receiver Malik Nabers. Already in the thick of his rehab and recovery from a torn ACL, it was reported that Nabers had a second surgery on that same knee.
In the wake of this alarming news, Giants fans have likely felt some sort of mini panic. And, they are not alone. NFL insider Peter Schrager just appeared on ESPN's "Get Up!" and was right there with the fan base in his concerns:
"Nabers, very quietly, we find out he had a second surgery on that knee to kind of take care of some scar tissue. I don't love that. I don't love a player, at that age, with that talent, to have a second surgery before getting on the field."
We came to find out the second surgery happened weeks prior to the report. Schrager's thoughts on that surgery happen to be exactly how Giants fans have been feeling since hearing the news.
The fan base doesn't love it, either.
It is a difficult reality to try and accept that a 22-year-old mega athlete, such as Nabers, would require a second surgery to help him in his ACL recovery. But, here we are.
According to the report, it isn't supposed to impact Nabers' return at all. He is apparently still going to be ready to play Week 1. However, it will likely take him a bit before returning to form. Nabers will not be the same guy we're used to seeing on that Sunday Night Football showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.
And, here's the thing: if Schrager seems worried, then it is more than justified for the fans to be worried.
If Schrager would have come out and acted like this wasn't a big deal, then maybe Giants fans wouldn't have to be all that worried. But, that wasn't the case. Schrager seemed more negative than positive. There was some skepticism in his voice.
Now, here is some positivity for Giants fans. If you look back at Nabers' playing history, he hasn't had any serious injuries before this one. He had stayed relatively healthy his whole college career at LSU and was never victim of something that derailed his season for good.
So, there is reason to believe that this is an outlier. We know that anybody can suffer an injury and at any point. We've seen it happen in the "freak" variety, too. So, maybe this is truly just an outlier situation for Nabers.
That's the best we can all be hoping for, at this point, and it isn't out of the realm of possibilities. RIght now, it's May and it's easy to freak out after this second surgery. But, let's take a step back and wait until September to have a real, concrete thought on all of this.
