Following months of speculation, Odell Beckham Jr. is a member of the New York Giants once more. The veteran wide receiver returns nearly a decade after his unceremonious exit, which has drawn a fair share of opinions — good and bad.
Much has been made of Beckham's Giants reunion well before the news became official, and understandably so. He's a polarizing player whose first stint with the club had extreme highs before ending on a sour note. Not to mention, it remains to be seen how much gas the 33-year-old has left in the tank at this stage of his career.
However, maybe we should all pump the brakes before letting Beckham's arrival divide us. He still has a long way to go to earn a spot on New York's 53-man roster.
Giants fans should hit pause before reacting to Odell Beckham Jr. reunion
It's been quite some time since Beckham's gotten a taste of NFL action. His efforts, or lack thereof, across nine games with the Miami Dolphins in 2024 left much to be desired, as the numbers bear out.
136 receivers saw at least 18 targets in Beckham's lone campaign with the Dolphins, and he was one of them. Here's where the three-time Pro Bowler ranked in some notable metrics, courtesy of Pro Football Focus ($):
- 133rd in passer rating when targeted (33.3)
- 132nd in yards per route run (0.52)
- 132nd in PFF's receiving grade (50.1)
If the G-Men are getting this version of Beckham in 2026, it's hard to envision him being part of their Week 1 lineup. The 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year is no longer at the height of his powers, to say the least. Meanwhile, he'll have to compete with fellow offseason additions Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III and third-round rookie Malachi Fields for opportunities.
In other words, Beckham faces an uphill battle to survive final cuts. So, the contingent of fans who are just happy to see the once-electrifying playmaker representing Big Blue again and the doubters alike shouldn't overreact.
For what it's worth, Beckham has a few things working in his favor, like being a Giants icon. A strong connection to the franchise's head coach, John Harbaugh, dating back to their overlapping tenures with the Baltimore Ravens, also helps. Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, uncertainty surrounding New York star wideout Malik Nabers' ongoing recovery from a complicated knee injury looms large.
