One unexpected roster shakeup could solve a massive problem for the Giants

If the Bears cut Tremaine Edmunds, the Giants could solve a lot of their problems at linebacker.

With just the Super Bowl remaining on Sunday, the NFL offseason is upon us. The New York Giants can get the ball rolling by determining which positions they need to address in free agency and the draft as they prepare their roster for training camp this summer.

We can expect the G-Men to prioritize the wide receiver position and look to improve their secondary. Big Blue could use the No. 5 pick in the draft on Ohio State wideout Carnell Tate or Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs, as well as re-signing Wan’Dale Robinson in free agency.

Another position Big Blue could target this offseason is linebacker, with the uncertainty around free agent Micah McFadden, who played only the season opener last year due to injuries, and Bobby Okereke, who could be a cut candidate. If the Giants make changes at linebacker, they may have an opportunity to jump on this veteran linebacker on the open market.

Tremaine Edmunds could be the perfect fit for the Giants at linebacker if made available by the Bears

Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report recently listed every team’s most likely cap casualties ahead of the 2026 NFL offseason. For the Bears, Ballentine lists veteran linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, whose release would save Chicago approximately $15 million in cap space.

"He's only 27, but he did miss four games this season with a groin injury. It feels more likely that he would be headed to a contract extension that could push money into the future, but linebacker is not a premium position, so a cut could be considered," Ballentine wrote.

While this move could save the Bears some money, for a team looking to compete next year and win the tough NFC North division again, as they did this season, retaining Edmunds is essential, as the veteran is a crucial part of that on defense. The 27-year-old is viewed as a threat to tight ends and a turnover-forcer, as he recorded four interceptions and one fumble recovery in 2025.

However, if Chicago decides to go with a younger or cheaper option at linebacker, Edmunds could be a nice fit in Dennard Wilson’s defense with the Giants. Edmunds would join a linebacker room consisting of Okereke, Darius Muasau, and Chuancey Golston, so he would clearly be a massive improvement at the position.

Whether the Bears cut Edmunds or not, or if the Giants decide to pursue him or not, if he does become available, it’s safe to say that the G-Men still need to address the linebacker position either in free agency or the NFL Draft.

Big Blue has plenty of depth at outside linebacker with Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, so they could also address the position via trade. Many believe Kayvon could be dealt this offseason, which could land the Giants an upgrade elsewhere.

The John Harbaugh era has just begun! Big Blue fans must now trust that Harbaugh will build the best possible roster ahead of the 2026 season and for years to come.
