The fiasco that was the 2024 New York Giants quarterback situation left the team with no other choice but to explore new options in the offseason. G-Men fans are now left wondering who the face of the franchise will be moving forward.
Selecting a quarterback in the draft feels like the most direct path to address NY's issues under center. Even if Big Blue's interest in Matthew Stafford persists, the team would still need a long-term solution to succeed the 37-year-old.
One player that several teams have become infatuated with is Miami quarterback Cam Ward, an All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist. Over the weekend, the Mangia Cast brought on special guest Phil Simms to discuss NY's future, and he offered his thoughts on the highly touted prospect.
“Cam Ward, he’s fun to watch. I’ve watched about three or four of his games," Simms said. "I saw him play against the University of Louisville, I don’t know if it was his best game of the year, but damn, if it wasn’t, I want to see the best one.”

Ward ranks among the most prolific passers in recent collegiate history, leading the Canes' offense to an NCAA-best 43.9 points per game in 2024. He finished the campaign with 4,313 passing yards and 39 TDs on 9.5 yards per attempt. In the Louisville game that Simms referenced, Ward completed 21-of-32 passing attempts for 319 yards, four TDs, and no interceptions.
“He made so many incredibly high-effort, big-time throws. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, there are three of them here.’ It’s like, every series. Hell, it was every other throw. I just went, ‘Oh my gosh! Another rocket down the middle.’ He’s got a great feel for the game."
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound gunslinger could be a great fit in NY. His throws have incredible velocity and he creates explosive plays in the pocket.
Simms is one of the Giants' greatest quarterbacks in franchise history. He was the starter when NY won the Super Bowl in 1986 and 1990 and spent his entire 14-year career in the Meadowlands. The two-time Pro Bowler knows what it takes to be an excellent signal-caller at the next level.
Joe Schoen has also made his feelings clear about Shedeur Sanders of Colorado. The son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion, Sanders was one of the most efficient passers in college football this past season. The general consensus is that Sanders will still be around by the time the Giants pick at No. 3, while Ward could be snatched by the Titans or Browns.
Simms' approval of Ward is further proof that people are bought into his talent. Many things can change between now and the next two months, but pairing Ward with Malik Nabers would make next season worthwhile for Giants fans.
