3 NY Giants on the initial 53-man roster who won't last the whole season
The NY Giants will look slightly different this season with several new additions. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll worked hard this offseason to build the best roster possible leading up to Sunday's matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants improved their offensive line, drafted Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick to fill their open WR1 job, and acquired help on defense with the addition of Brian Burns to help put the team in the best position to win in 2024.
While Schoen and Daboll worked hard to construct the Giants' initial 53-man roster out of training camp, several players who made the team will only last part of the season. As the regular season progresses, players will get injured and not exceed expectations, resulting in them falling on the Giants' depth chart and giving opportunities to other players on the practice squad or in free agency to step up and perform well. Let's look at three Giants on the 53-man roster who won't the last whole season:
3. WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton
The Giants wide receivers room will be interesting to follow this season. Nabers will be the player to watch out for this year, along with emerging star Wan'Dale Robinson, veteran Darius Slayton, and Jalin Hyatt, who is in line for a significant sophomore campaign this year. However, a player that not many people are talking about is second-year wideout Bryce Ford-Wheaton.
Ford-Wheaton went undrafted last season after an impressive career at West Virginia, where he totaled 62 receptions, scored seven touchdowns, and was a second-team All-Big 12 Conference selection in his final year with the Mountaineers. Despite a solid collegiate career, Ford-Wheaton did not get drafted in 2023 and signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent.
Ford-Wheaton impressed the Giants throughout the preseason and looked like a candidate to make last year's squad, but he suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 of the Giants' preseason against the Jets. Ford-Wheaton has worked extremely hard to recover from that injury to make the team out of training camp this season, as he's expected to make a difference on special teams. He made the team over players like Isaiah Hodgins and Dante 'Turbo' Miller, which may have surprised a few people, but the coaching staff sees something in him. If Ford-Wheaton does not live up to the hype or can't stay healthy this year, expect someone from the practice squad like Hodgins to take his spot and get a chance to succeed.
