Giants QB Tommy DeVito

What a difference a year makes for some players, and in this case, for Tommy Cutlets. A year ago, Tommy DeVito was an undrafted rookie free agent just hoping to make the team. A year later, DeVito still has some of his popularity from the 2023 season and a lot of the Big Blue fanbase behind him.

What might have helped DeVito’s cause was the hip and oblique injury suffered to veteran Drew Lock during the first quarter of the game against the Lions, as DeVito ended up playing the rest of the way. Daniel Jones was never going to suit up, as the rainy field at MetLife Stadium had an impact on things.

DeVito’s numbers might not jump out at you from the preseason opener, as he went 8-for-15 for 92 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Although, he nearly threw a touchdown pass to Tyree Jackson and would have had one, but Jackson got tackled at the one yard line, which set up Eric Gray's second touchdown run.

What impressed many with DeVito’s performance against Detroit was how comfortable and confident he looked running the offense. Having regular season experience from a season ago certainly has to help DeVito, as he won three games in '23 for the G-Men.

To go even further with the DeVito hype train, Tommy Lugauer from WFAN New York Radio made his case that DeVito not only makes the team, but he should be the Week 1 starter for the Giants against the Minnesota Vikings next month.

DeVito taking the job away from Jones is unlikely, but Brian Daboll has confidence in the second-year QB to step in if needed. Given the injury to Lock, and along with Jones’ own recovery from the torn ACL from last season, DeVito has put himself in a good scenario to where he went from being on the roster bubble to potentially being on the 53-man roster for the regular season. Keeping three QBs for the Week 1 roster might be the road Daboll and Co. drive down.
