Loser No. 2: WR Darius Slayton
While many in New York and around the NFL were excited about the addition of Nabers, veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton had to be questioning his spot with the Giants moving forward. It’s evident the Giants value Slayton, as he’s led the team in receiving for a number of seasons, and Schoen dished out a new contract to the former Auburn star last offseason. However, he’s also drafted wide receivers during each of his drafts in New York, bringing in Wan’Dale Robinson in 2022, and Jalin Hyatt in 2023.
Now, Nabers, Hyatt and Robinson figure to lead the corps in 2024, with Slayton and Isaiah Hodgins filling out the room. However, Slayton threw a new wrinkle into Schoen’s plan recently, when he stated his desire for an extension, which led to him skipping out for the offseason voluntary program.
Schoen hasn’t been shy about dealing wide receivers, a la Kadarius Toney. Now, nobody is saying Slayton is Toney, but there’s certainly a need for pass catchers that’s pressing with multiple teams in the NFL. Perhaps Schoen would rather accumulate more draft ammo than pay Slayton more money, especially after drafting Nabers in Round 1.
